Dame Carol Vivien Robinson DBE FRS FMedSci, (nee Bradley) is a British chemist who is President of the Royal Society of Chemistry. She is the Royal Society Research Professor at Oxford’s Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory, and Dr Lee’s Professor of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry. She is also a Professorial Fellow of Exeter College. She was previously Professor of Mass Spectrometry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge.
She was awarded the Interdisciplinary Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2011 for “development of a novel area of research, gas phase structural biology using highly refined mass spectrometry methods”, the Aston Medal and the FEBS/EMBO Women In Science Award.
In 2015 she was a laureate of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards; “For her groundbreaking work in macromolecular mass spectrometry and pioneering gas phase structural biology by probing the structure and reactivity of single proteins and protein complexes, including membrane proteins.” She was also made a Rhodes Trustee.
In 2017 she was elected a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences.
Robinson was awarded the Davy Medal in 2010 for her innovative use of mass spectrometry to characterize large protein complexes.

Robinson is the University of Cambridge’s first female professor of chemistry (2001), and Oxford’s first female professor of chemistry (2009). Robinson’s research has advanced electrospray mass spectrometry to the point that protein and other complex macromolecules are possible to be studied in the gasphase. Robinson’s important research on protein folding and molecular chaperones has been a major contribution to the field. Her research has contributed to the understanding of gas-phase structural biology and helped to develop methods for studying protein complexes in their natural environments. This will help with drug discovery. She is also the co-founder and director of OMass Therapeutics (a University of Oxford spinout company that applies mass spectrometry technology for drug discovery).
