She qualified for the 1980 U.S Olympic team, but was prevented from competing due to the boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics. One of the 461 Congressional Gold Medals, which were created specifically for spurned athletes, was awarded to her. At the Liberty Bell Classic, an alternative event for athletes who are boycotted, she competed in her first international competition. She won a silver medal with a leap of 6.60m. In recognition of her accomplishments, she was awarded the Dial Award in that same year. At Willingboro High School, New Jersey, she set the indoor high jump record for Willingboro High School at 21′ 7″ (6.59m) in 1981. Following in her older brother’s footsteps, she went on to the University of Houston. Houston was the place where she won two National Collegiate Athletic Association long-jump championship titles: 21-11 3/4 in 1983 and 22-1 in 1985. She also joined her brother at Santa Monica Track Club.

Lewis participated in the 1987 IAAF World Indoor Championships. Her best jump was 6.23m. Lewis qualified for her third Olympics in 1988. However, she failed to qualify for the finals by one centimeter.

In 2000, Lewis began competing in two-woman bobsled and, although she failed to make the 2002 US Olympic team, she served as Shauna Rohbock’s brakeman at the 2002 World Cup in Calgary.

She won the Olympic Trials and was able to represent the United States at 1984 Summer Olympics. At twenty-two, she finished in ninth place. She won the NCAA Outdoor Championships again the following year and was awarded bronze at the World Cup of Athletics. Lewis reached her peak in Zurich, August of that year. She set a personal record and broke the American record for the long jump twice in the same track meeting. Jackie Joyner-Kersee broke her record of 7.04m for two years.
