He held the WBA super light title in 2005 and competed from 2000 through 2007.
Maussa started his career in Colombia with 12 wins before moving to the United States. After winning four fights in the U.S., he faced Jeffrey Resto in New York. Resto is a highly-talked-about prospect who has been called “perhaps the most-talked about young pro in New York”. This battle between two undefeated fighters (17 0 Resto vs. 16 Maussa) was won by Resto, who couldn’t deal with Maussa’s unconventional fighting style. Maussa took a surprise victory and abruptly quit in round 6. Half a century later, both fighters lost to Victor Ortiz.
Maussa’s victory over Resto earned him a chance to face Miguel Angel Cotto, a fellow 17-0 fighter and WBC International light weight titleholder. Maussa’s bout against Cotto ended in a less successful outcome. Cotto won by an 8th- round TKO. Maussa won two of three fights that were less well-known after this defeat. On 25 June 2005, Maussa won a KO victory against Vivian Harris, WBA light-welterweight champion. With this exciting win, Maussa became a new champion of one of the most competitive divisions in boxing.

This victory cemented Maussa’s reputation as a gatekeeper for promising light welterweight prospects. However, it was his last victory. Maussa lost his WBA title to Ricky Hatton in a unification bout on 26 November 2005. After losing to Manuel Guarnica in a unanimous decision, Maussa lost to Victor Ortiz, a well-respected future titleholder. He was eliminated in the first round. Maussa then retired with a professional record that included 20 wins and 5 losses over 113 professional boxing rounds.
The bout was notable for a number of reasons: Harris was an overwhelming favorite and is regarded as one of the best boxers at the weight and Maussa’s awkwardly clever style and frequent clowning gestures and facial expressions lent him an air of amateurishness. At the beginning of the seventh round Maussa delivered a stunning left hook, KO-ing Harris. Maussa then lunged downward and punched him in the head while he was already supine on the canvas. The ropes absorbed the impact of the blow. Still, this act has led to much controversy, as the hit could have disqualified Maussa. After the match, however, the bout referees ruled that the late hit was “insignificant”, allowing Maussa to keep his title. When interviewed about this punch, Maussa claimed he didn’t connect with Harris on purpose, and that his sole intention was to impress the fallen Harris in case he had any desire to fight on.
