Frode Kjekstad is one of the most popular and richest Jazz Musician who was born on November 23, 1974 in Mier Municipality, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Frode Kjekstad (born 23 November 1974 in Lier, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz guitarist who is who is married to jazz vocalist Aina Friden and well-known for his recordings and collaborations together with musicians from jazz such as Lonnie Smith Eric Alexander, Mike LeDonne, Joe Farnsworth, Byron Landham, Alberto Marsico,Frank Foster, Johnny Griffin, Don Menza, Jim Morrison, Mark Nightingale, Claire Martin, Deborah Brown, and Wendell Brunious.

In 2008, Kjekstad recorded an album in trio with Norwegian super bassist Per Mathisen and drummer Ole Morten Summer which was never released because of the amount of work and financial issues. A few of the songs can be heard on YouTube.

After doing a tour with old friend sax player Eric Alexander in 2013, Kjekstad was invited to play some gigs at the club Smoke in New York with the legendary organ quartet “Mike LeDonne´s Groover Quartet” featuring Eric Alexander, B3 player Mike LeDonne and drummer Joe Farnsworth. Regular guitarist Peter Bernstein was out of town. Kjekstad also booked a studio to make a new CD with this band. The result was “Frode Kjekstad: A Piece Of The Apple”, released in 2017.

In October 2019 Kjekstad recorded a new trio album in Norway, featuring Norwegian bass player Frode Berg and the drummer Magnus Sefaniassen Eide. The CD is called “Frode Kjekstad: In Essence”, and will be released in desember 2019.

Participating in the Sandvika Bigband in the late 1990s, which was thought to be Norway’s finest big Band, Kjekstad got the chance to play with some of the most famous American as well as European Jazz musicians.In 1999, when he was 24 he was invited to be a part of Swedish B3 organist Paul Wagnberg’s Organ Unit trio. The position was the beginning of establishing Kjekstad among the most renowned jazz guitarists in Norway and helped him build a name for himself and led to all sorts of performances. In 2000, he released his debut CD, which was not officially released “Presenting Frode Kjekstad”, featuring Paul Wagnberg (B3) and Borre Dalhaug (drums). The CD received rave reviews from USA in the USA and Italy: “This young genius has a perfect sense of time and rhythm” (Frank Forte, Just Jazz Guitar 2001).

Guitars Kjekstad acquired a beautiful 1983 Gibson ES-175D with mahogany body in 1992. He then was playing only this guitar until his retirement in 2016. In 2016, he bought an 1973 Gibson Johnny Smith, which is now his primary instrument.

After having a meeting with New York based jazz guitarist Randy Johnston in the 1990s He was offered the chance to record his first self-titled album “New York Time” in February 2002. The record was made on the streets of New York with Dr. Lonnie Smith and drummer Byron Landham, and with the saxophonist Eric Alexander on three tunes. The group set a new record in the studio to record an album in the least amount of time (about three hours) which left plenty of extra time to socialize and share stories of Lonnie Smith’s long career. The album “New York Time”, released in 2004, opened to the world, leading to many collaborations and trips. In 2003, Kjekstad also got married to the jazz vocalist Aina Friden and had three kids.

In 2012 Kjekstad hooked up with Italians drummer Enzo Zirilli and organist Alberto Marsico. They recorded the album “Frode Kjekstad: The Italian Job” and played gigs around Europe.
