Marinelli played 13 matches in the following season with a total of 305 minutes of action. This averaged less than 25 minutes per match. Marinelli was dismissed in the 2-2 draw against Bradford City, 25 November 2000. He had suffered ankle injuries which cost him his place in the Argentina U-20 Championship 2001.
After an unimpressive start in the 2002–03 season, Marinelli played just 7 league matches in the season, having scored once against Brentford in a 2002–03 Football League Cup match. Marinelli was a player for Argentina’s under-17 football team in 1998 Mundialito Youth Tournament. They were champions. In 1999 South American Under-17 Football Championship, Argentina finished 4th and did not qualify for FIFA U-17 World Championship 1999. Marinelli also played in friendly matches with the Argentina under-20 football team, scoring twice against Bolivia.
Marinelli was dubbed the “new Maradona” by the English press. He played his first match against Middlesbrough’s reserve team, and scored from a free kick in a game with nearly 10,000 spectators. Marinelli made his debut in the 1999 Boxing Day Premier League match against Sheffield Wednesday. He lost the second half of the match by a score of 1-0. He made his second Premier League appearance in that match against Watford, drawing 1-1.
Under Steve McClaren, who was appointed manager for the 2001-02 season, Marinelli featured regularly for the first team after recovering from a calf injury earlier in the season and earned a regular spot in the first team after a 5-1 win against Derby County, in which he scored his first goal for the team and later his second, had one assist and contributed to another goal after having a shot rebounded to Szilárd Németh. Losing his starting place in the second half of the season, Marinelli ended the 2001-02 season with 20 appearances.

In January 2005, after attracting interest from Torino, Marinelli paid 30,000 Euros from his own pocket to leave Racing and return to the Italian side. His debut at Serie B was against Hellas Verona and he was sent off just as his last match at the club. Scoring in a 3-1 win against Pescara, Marinelli played a total of 16 league matches and helped Torino to achieve promotion to 2005–06 Serie A, but the team was not admitted at the first tier for financial problems and his contract was ended due to the financial crisis at the club.
