In in 2002 King was photographing coffee tables for various publishers. After a writer quit the project of a golfer’s antiques, King was asked if the researcher could take over as well as writing the novel. Over the next few months, King wrote various illustrated books, and also ghostwriting for prominent celebrities and experts in their field. Since 2008, King has released two major non-fiction works that examine the issues of US civil rights the past. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2013 for his work on Thurgood Marshall, the attorney of NAACP Legal Defense Fund. King was a freelance writer in New York, King landed free editing and writing assignments for newspapers of small size and magazines. In 1991, he was offered the position of Macmillan Publishing as the assistant to the president and the publisher. While there as self-taught photographer and photographer, he was able to publish his beauty and fashion work in national magazines like Glamour, Jane, and Modern Bride, as well as international editions of magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Madame Figaro, and Marie Claire. Some of his clients included L’Oreal, Redken, Michael Kors as well as Thierry Mugler.

In 1949, four young African American men were falsely accused of raping seventeen-year-old white farmgirl from Groveland, Florida and were indicted by an all-white jury. (Since the beginning of the century the black population was disenfranchised in the state and repressed under Jim Crow laws.) The attorney Thurgood Marshall, at the time special counsel for the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund, represented the Groveland Boys, taking their case to the U.S. Supreme Court, that ultimately ruled against and reaffirmed the guilt verdicts.

It explores the life of Willie Francis, a 16-year-old African-American youth in Louisiana who, in 1946, survived being sentenced to death by the electric chair. His case became an international media story. His case was taken on appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court by Bertrand DeBlanc, a young Cajun lawyer. Francis had been convicted of killing DeBlanc’s good friend, Andrew Thomas. King reveals the backstage lobbying among the justices and Justice Frankfurter’s regret about voting against his conscience in favor of allowing the execution to proceed.
