He is an ex- American football linebacker who played in the National Football League for the Cincinnati Bengals from 1985 to 1991. He was selected in the second round in 1985 NFL Draft and was a part of the Bengals’ starting line-up in Super Bowl XXIII. He played college football for Tennessee and was captain of the 1984 Vols’ squad.
Zander was part of a linebacker team that included Reggie McKenzie and Toles. He recorded a team-leading total of 167 tackles during his senior year, 1984. Zander also recorded an interception and forced three fumbles. He also broke up six passes. In Tennessee’s 24-24 win against Army, he had 16 tackles. He also had 22 tackles in the Vols 17-12 defeat to Kentucky. He had a team- leading twenty tackles in Tennessee’s loss to Maryland in 1984 Sun Bowl. He was also awarded the “Most Valuable Player” award. SouthSports named him All- SEC.
Zander contemplated retiring in March 1991 after the Bengals offered him a contract he considered insufficient, and missed the first two games of the season, but played during the remaining 14 games.
During his career at Tennessee, Zander registered 342 tackles (195 solo), including a sack and 5 tackles-for-loss, as well as 5 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 9 batted-down passes. As of 2012, his 167 tackles in 1984 remains the team’s 5th-highest single-season total, and the highest since the 1970s.
Zander’s breakthrough season was in 1983 when he recorded 129 tackles (67 solo) and was second only to Alvin Toles’ 135. In the Vols’ first loss to Pittsburgh, he had 20 tackles (7 solo), in Tennessee’s 41–34 win over Alabama, 13 tackles (8 alone) and 19 tackles against Ole Miss in the Vols 13-10 defeat. He had 16 tackles in Tennessee’s win over Rutgers at Giants Stadium, Zander’s hometown state of New Jersey.

Zander was a West Morris Mendham High School football player under Richard Attonito, his long-time coach. In 1980, Zander played three positions: fullback, linebacker, and punter. He ran for 1,178 yards and 26 touchdowns, had 167 tackles (110 solo), and averaged 41 yards per kick, with an extra-long of 83 yards on special teams. At the end of the season, he was awarded All- State recognition.
Zander signed with the Tennessee Volunteers as part of an alvin toles signing class, which also included Reggie McKenzie and Raleigh McKenzie, Johnnie Jones and Alan Cockrell. He played very sparingly in 1981 as a reserve behind Mike Cofer and recorded only 11 tackles (six solo) during his freshman year. He made his debut in the final against Vanderbilt. In that game, he recorded 9 tackles (1 loss) and one batted-down pass. He also played in Tennessee’s victory over Wisconsin, 28-21, in the 1981 Garden State Bowl and recorded a record 14 tackles. He was injured during his sophomore season 1982. However, he still managed to pick up 35 tackles (20 solo) as well as a fumble.
Zander was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round (43rd overall pick) of the 1985 NFL Draft, one of three Tennessee linebackers (the other two being Reggie McKenzie and Alvin Toles) drafted that year. During his seven seasons with the Bengals, he played in a total of 106 games, and was a starter in 94. He recorded 8 sacks, 3 interceptions and 7 fumble recoveries (which he returned for a total of 99 yards). By the 1989 season, he was the Bengals’ defensive signal-caller, relaying the play from the coaches to the other players on the field, and modifying it as necessary to respond to the offensive formation.
