Carl Hoffman, born May 4, 1960, is an American journalist/author whose recent focus has been on the fascination of the West with indigenous cultures, particularly in Borneo and New Guinea.
Hoffman began Savage Harvest to unravel the mystery surrounding Michael Clark Rockefeller’s disappearance in 1961. He was the son of New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Hoffman was able to learn Bahasa Indonesia from his father and lived in an isolated village between 10,000-square miles of swampy land with the Asmat, a tribe that used to be headhunters and cannibals along the southwest coast of New Guinea.
The Last Wild Men of Borneo was shortlisted in 2019 for an Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime Fiction and was a Banff Mountain Book Award finalist.
