Callista Chimombo is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on May 24, 1959 in Zomba, Malawi. Madame Callista ChapolaChimombo (Callista Mutharika), born 24 May 1959, is a Malawian politician. She is the widow of President Bingu Wa Mutharika. From 2010 to 2012, she was the First Lady of Malawi. Chimombo is a current member of the Cabinet of Malawi as a National Coordinator of Maternal, Infant and Child Health and HIV/Nutrition/Malaria and Tuberculosis. She was also a member the Pan-African parliament and the Malawi Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Culture. She was Secretary of Malawi Women’s Caucus in 2005. Chimombo is a member the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and an ex-member of the United Democratic Front.

Callista Mutharika caused tension after she spoke out against local NGO’s who, “supported homosexuality” and “distracted peace”. She claimed that NGO’s were being funded to disrupt the peace and spread homosexuality throughout the country. She also criticized civil rights groups for organizing July 20th, 2011 Malawi protests. Rural dwellers were encouraged not to protest. Her statements on protest and civil society were criticized heavily. Eight organizations responded in writing, acknowledging her right of free speech and questioning her role. They claimed she was spreading propaganda and that her comments were’reckless’ and ‘unacceptable’.

Mutharika, was also in charge of the country’s Malaria program. This was made an official cabinet role on September 8, 2011.

After her marriage to Bingu Wa Mutharika, she was the first lady of Malawi until the death of Mutharika on 5 April 2012. Mutharika was a politically vocal first lady. She publicly weighed in on the decision by the DPP to fire the first and second vice-president by stating that Joyce Banda (who had not publicly expressed an interest to run as President) was not qualified to run as president. She stated that Banda’s supporters were tantalizing themselves by drawing parallels with Liberian first female President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Some analysts have suggested that she may bid to run for Presidency in 2014.

After much speculation and rumors, it was announced in January 2010 that President Mutharika and Chimombo were engaged and would be marrying on the 1st of May 2010. The couple got married on Valentine’s Day 2010, in a traditional ceremony broadcast on TV. Mutharika and Callista showed their joy at one point by dancing on the dance floor with their children and family. The interlude of music made the entire event a frenzy full of excitement and joy. They were married in a Roman Catholic Church.

Her work, including charity work has been considered as a salaried position by the Mutharika administration and she a monthly sum of over $7,000 for doing charity work as a coordinator of safe motherhood. On September8th, 2011, an online newspaper, Maravi post and the Nyasatimes Newspapers reported that Callista Mutharika had been either accidentally or purposefully listed as Vice President of Malawi on the official Malawi government website and included screenshots. This information was corrected on the government site. The Mutharika administration though has denied that she is the nation’s Vice President.
