Porter’s leadership, the Akron team won the NCAA Men’s Division I Soccer Championship in 2010. They defeated the Louisville Cardinals 1-0.
On August 29, 2012, it was announced that he would become the head coach of MLS club Portland Timbers after the conclusion of the 2012 NCAA season.
Helping guide the Timbers to the MLS Western Conference Championship in two of the last three seasons, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active MLS head coaches (41 wins – 25 losses – 36 draws, .578) in 2013-15. The 25 career losses in his first 100 career games as an MLS head coach ranks tied for the fewest losses with San Jose’s Dominic Kinnear among all MLS coaches who have reached 100 or more games in the league. Under Porter’s guidance, the Timbers made Providence Park one of the toughest places to play in the league, registering a regular-season mark of 24–7–20 at Providence Park over the three seasons 2013–15.
After Akron’s 2009 near-perfect season, Porter was rumored be in discussions with Major League Soccer club D.C. United regarding their vacant head coach position. Porter and the University of Akron reached an agreement on terms for a new contract that would keep him in Akron over the next five-years.

Porter was hired by Indiana University in 2000 as an assistant soccer coach. The Zips hired Porter to be their head soccer coach after Ken Lolla left University of Akron in Dec 2005. Porter was named Coach of the Year by the MAC in 2007 and took the Zips to two Mid-American Conference titles.
Porter attended Indiana University, where he was a member of the men’s soccer squad from 1994 to 1997. In 1997, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in sports management. The San Jose Clash chose Porter in the third round (27th overall), of the 1998 MLS College Draft. Porter did not join the Clash until 1999, but his time there was brief – he only made four appearances, and was dismissed in the 32nd minute. After that performance, the Clash loaned him to the Sacramento Geckos of A-League. He was then waived in June. After being signed by Tampa Bay Mutiny, he quickly returned to MLS. After sustaining several injuries to his knees, he had to have arthroscopic surgery on both of his knees in the off-season. He retired on June 30, 2000. Porter was part of the U.S. soccer team that won the bronze medal at 1997 World University Games.
Porter was named the head coach of the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team on October 20, 2011, while retaining his duties as coach of the Akron Zips. His first task was attempting to guide the U-23 team to a successful qualifying run in March 2012 for the 2012 Olympic Games in London; however, following a 2–0 loss to Canada and a 3–3 draw with El Salvador, the Americans were eliminated.
