Burhanuddin Abdullah is one of the most popular and richest Economist who was born on July 10, 1947 in Garut Regency, West Java, Indonesia. Burhanuddin Abdullah, who was born 10 July 1947, is a former Governor at Bank Indonesia. He served in that capacity from 2003 to 2008. He succeeds Syahril Sbirin, who was Governor from 1999 through 2003. He was convicted of corruption.
After being nominated by President Megawati Sukarnoputri as a candidate in the position, Burhanuddin was appointed Governor of Bank Indonesia. The parliament was given three candidates to be considered by President Megawati. They were Miranda Goeltom (senior bank manager) and Cyrillus Hartinowo (both from Bank Indonesia).
Burhanuddin was previously a senior economist in Indonesia before he was appointed Governor of Bank Indonesia. Between 12 June 2001 and 9 Aug 2001, he was briefly the Coordinating Minister for Economics, Finance and Industry of the National Unity Cabinet headed by President Abdurrahman Wahid. Later, he was elected Chair of the Indonesian Economic Scholars Association.

Burhanuddin was a student at Padjadjaran University, Bandung. He graduated in 1974 with a degree as an agricultural specialist. Later, he studied at Michigan State University in America and graduated with a Master’s of Arts (MA), in Economics in 1984.
In April 2008, Burhanuddin was arrested for alleged involvement in the misuse of Bank Indonesia funds and subsequently sentenced to five years in jail for his role in the management of the funds. He was released from jail in March 2010 after serving two years of his sentence. After his release, Burhanuddin was active in community affairs, giving lectures on policy and management issues to professional organisations and in universities in Indonesia.
