In the beginning, by releasing Gerontophilia in 2013 LaBruce ended certain of the more explicit sexual aspects of his style of filmmaking. LaBruce remained committed to his tradition in exploring taboos about sexuality and focusing on the intergenerational bond between an untrained man and an older person, however, he decided to incorporate it in a way that was more appealing to the general public.
In March of 2011, LaBruce directed a performance of Arnold Schoenberg’s operetta Pierrot Lunaire at the Hebbel am Ufer Theatre in Berlin. This version of the opera featured gender diversity, castration scenes, and dildos, in addition to portraying Pierrot in the role of a transgender male. He later also shot this adaptation in the 2014 stage production Pierrot Lunaire.

LaBruce was inspired to create the film after reading a confession sent to XConfessions by a heterosexual woman who fantasized about going to a gay bar and having sex with a homosexual man.
