Lisle Ellis is one of the most popular and richest Composer who was born on November 17, 1951 in Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada. Lisle Ellis (born November 17, 1951), is a Canadian jazz composer and bassist who is well-known for his improvisational style as well as the use of electronic music.

Ellis’s main focus has been on the development of an electro-acoustic interface, which he calls “bass and circuitry” since the late 1990s. After completing a template for the interface, Ellis began to focus his attention on acoustic music projects. He focuses on jazz-based improvisation and finding a balance between electronic and acoustic musical interests.

Central to Ellis’s music, and a vehicle for both his electronic and acoustic experiments, has been his long standing trio with Larry Ochs and Donald Robinson called What We Live. Di Terra, an Italy-based trio with Alberto Braida (piano), and Fabrizio Spera (drums), has been an exclusively acoustic music vehicle for Ellis. His experimental trio Audible Means with Ellery Eskelin (saxophone), and Erik Deutsch (keyboards), was active on the New York scene in 2006 and 2007 and was a focal point for Ellis’s bass & circuitry explorations. Since his arrival in New York, collaborations and interactions with composer/electronic musician Tom Hamilton have also been important to Ellis’s work in electronic music.

Ellis’s discography features performances with Peter Brotzmann and Andrew Cyrille as well as Dave Douglas and Glenn Spearman. There are also about 40 recordings for Music & Arts and Victo. Kaleidoscopes, The Ornette Coleman Songbook (1989), was awarded five stars by Down Beat magazine.

Ellis attended the Vancouver Academy of Music under Walter Robertson. He also studied at Douglas College in Vancouver. From 1975-1979, he studied at the Creative Music Studio in New York City.

Ellis was born in Toronto, Ontario Canada, 1982-1983. He then moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, from 1983 until 1992. Ellis received the Canada’s Fred Stone Award in 1986, which is given each year to musicians for their integrity and innovation. Ellis was an active participant in the formation of musical alliances, concert venues and concert series presentations in Vancouver in the 1980s and Montreal in the 80s. Vancouver’s New Orchestra Workshop is a particular collective that is still in existence nearly thirty years later.

After moving to the United States in 1992, he settled in San Francisco, working with Glenn Spearman from 1992 until 2001. He lived in San Diego from 2001–2005 and New York City from 2005 to the present. In 1994, he was a member of the Cecil Taylor band for a brief tour of California.
