On the 27th of March on 2012 MacLean made it onto her very first Olympic team when she won the final of the women’s 400-metre freestyle with a record- breaking Canadian record for 4.06.08. In the final day of trials, she was selected for the relay 4×200 metres freestyle alongside the teammate Amanda Reason. She set a new personal best of 1.58.09. This is all, Brittany wasn’t happy with her performance while her sister Heather was in the team. Heather, her sister Heather made it to the team at her last race, the 4×100-metre relay. She finished 3rd and securing her place to London.

In the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, MacLean swam the 400-metre freestyle in her first race, smashing her Canadian record of 4.05.06 which allowed her to be sixth place in the final. At the end of her finals, MacLean came in 7th in the final with the time of 4.06.24. In her second race the freestyle relay 4x200m, MacLean swam the anchor leg of the relay heats and qualified Canada to third place for the final alongside her teammates Barbara Jardin, Samantha Cheverton and Amanda Reason with a time of 7.50.84. The final was a tie, MacLean and her teammates were fourth in the final with the time of 7.50.65.

Brittany MacLean was first selected as a part of Canada’s national senior team back in the year 2011 when she competed in the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, China. She was selected for the 4×200 metre freestyle relay team which finished 7th in the final event of the competition. In the year 2011, MacLean was a qualified swimmer to compete in the 2011 third FINA World Junior Swimming Championships held in Lima, Peru, where she won two golds, a silver , and bronze. MacLean won gold in the 200-metre and 400-metre freestyle silver in the 4×100-metre freestyle relay as well as bronze for the freestyle relay 4×200 metres. She set a new junior world record in the 200-metre freestyle , with a the time of 1.58.93. She was a student at in the Silverthorn Collegiate Institute in Toronto.

In October, she announced her retirement, deciding to instead finish her degree in sport management at the University of Georgia.
