Brian Pothier (born April 15 1977) is an American former professional defenseman in ice hockey. Pothier was a player in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 2000 to 2010.
On the 3rd January 2008. Pothier had a brain injury which could have occurred due to the fact that Boston Bruins right winger Milan Lucic knocked him into the boards. This resulted in the fourth concussion reported in his career. The injury sidelined him for the next 14 months. Pothier later put the post- concussion symptoms and lengthy recovery to an undiagnosed astigmatism resulted of his concussion. He claimed that he recovered from the concussion 2 to three months following the incident, however his astigmatism was the cause of the symptoms believed to be post-concussion symptoms until it was identified by the time he was diagnosed in December of 2008.
On March 3, 2010, having registered 11 points in 41 games to that point in the 2009–10 season, Brian was traded along with prospect Oskar Osala to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Joe Corvo.
On the 17th of December, 2008, he took part at full speed for the first time in a while since his injury. On March 4 2009 Pothier had been assigned to Capitals’ American Hockey League affiliate The Hershey Bears, for conditioning and to determine whether he was suffering from post-concussion-related symptoms. Pothier was then recalled to the Capitals and returned skating on the 16th of March, 14 months after the injury that caused him to be injured. He got his goal for the first time since the accident on the 31st of March, 2009, against his team, the Tampa Bay Lightning.

As a child, Pothier played in the 1991 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament as a player on an ice hockey minor team of Beverly, Massachusetts.
In the absence of a draft selection to the NHL the Pothier played his college hockey for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. After his senior season, Pothier was signed as a no-cost player by the Atlanta Thrashers on March 27 in 2000. Following two years with the Thrashers the team was transferred into with the Ottawa Senators prior to the 2002-03 season as part of a deal with Shawn McEachern. He was then accepted with the Washington Capitals as a free agent in the summer of.
On July 27, 2010, Pothier ended his North American career and signed a two- year contract with European team Genève-Servette HC of the Swiss National League A (NLA). After two seasons in Switzerland, Pothier signed a two-year contract extension to remain with Genève-Servette. However he was unable to take the ice, due to lingering concussion symptoms that ultimately ended his professional career.
