Brian Caswell was born in the village of Gwernaffield in Wales on the 13th of January 1954. His family relocated to England at the age of five years old. At the age of 12, in 1966, his family relocated to Australia. He graduated with an undergraduate degree in Arts and an Education Diploma, and was a graduate of his school, the University of NSW. The 1970s were when Caswell started singing as well as songwriting. He was a teacher at school in 1976. He resigned from singing, but he continued to write songs.

Caswell taught in a variety of high schools, mostly in the fields of historical, English and writing creatively. For the past 15 years, he was employed as an educator as well as a basketball instructor. He started writing for the students he taught and published his first book, Merryll of the Stones in 1989. He decided to quit teaching after the success of his first two novels, and began writing full-time. He was awarded an award in the year 1995, the Children’s Peace Literature Award for his book Deucalion.
