Bret Schundler is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 14, 1959 in Colonia Department, Uruguay. Bret D. Schundler (born on January 14 1959) is a American politician hailing from New Jersey. He was in his Cabinet under governor Chris Christie as New Jersey Commissioner of Education, until the day he was fired on August 27, 2010.
His first election for elected office was a failed election for New Jersey Senate in 1991 and, regardless of the partisan nature of the contest and the predominantly Democratic constituency in the area (only 6 percent of people who voted were who were registered Republicans), Schundler lost to incumbent Edward T. O’Connor, Jr. in a narrow 55.1 percentage to 44.9 percentage margin. In the following time, Gerald McCann was removed as the mayor in Jersey City because of a conviction that was not connected to his public duties and Schundler ran in the special election to conclude all eight months remaining of McCann’s mandate. Schundler won the election in 17 percent votes in a field that was crowded with 19 candidates. As with most municipalities of New Jersey, Jersey City elections are non-partisan. Although Schundler did not claim to be a Republican in his advertisements or campaign literature however, he was widely believed as a Republican due to his campaign to his seat in the State Senate a year earlier and is thought to be one of the very first Republican to hold the office since 1917. The reason for his success to his victory was the fact that 2 African American candidates split the Black vote as well as Two siblings (Lou as well as Allen Manzo), also divided a significant number of votes.
Once in office, Schundler developed a reputation as a politician who could not be “bought off.” This strongly resonated in a city with a long legacy of corruption dating to the Frank Hague era. He subsequently won a full term in 1993 with 69% of the vote—the largest margin of victory since Jersey City returned to the Mayor-Council form of government in 1961, and according to some sources, in the city’s entire history. He won a second full term in 1997, winning a run-off election by a substantial margin.
After winning the primary, Schundler tried to reunite the party by reaching out to the figures who had endorsed Franks. This included having a unity lunch with Franks which was hosted by former governor Tom Kean, and retaining State Senator Joseph M. Kyrillos as state party chairman. Kyrillos had been appointed by DiFrancesco as state party chairman six weeks before the primary, and he had supported Franks in the primary. However, the party remained split. The Democratic candidate, Woodbridge Township Mayor Jim McGreevey (the unsuccessful Democratic candidate in 1997), exploited this division by painting Schundler as too conservative for New Jersey. Schundler made frequent campaign appearances on the late Bob Grant’s radio show to help bring voters out on election day. Schudler travelled to Israel as part of campaign to court the Jewish vote, and while there, the historic September 11 attack on the World Trade Center happened. The attack caused most air traffic in the US to be shut down for weeks, leaving Shundler stranded in Israel less than a month before the election. In the November election, Schundler was badly defeated, gaining 42% of the vote to McGreevey’s 56%. Schundler even lost Hudson County by 50,000 votes.
After he graduated from college, Schundler worked for Democratic Congressman Roy Dyson of Maryland. Later, he worked with Gary Hart’s presidential campaign in 1984. After Hart was defeated in the primary, Schundler began his career as a finance professional in the sales department at Salomon Brothers. Although he was not an expert in finance however, the person who interviewed him believed that anyone who was able to sell Hart in the western part of Iowa could have a career in finance. After 1987, Hart relocated to a different company, C. J. Lawrence and was later acquired by Deutsche Bank, where he was very successful financially. He retired in 1990 and after traveling the globe for a year, changed his voter registration to a Republican. He later admitted that he felt that the Democrats were enslaved by certain interests.
