Brad Vice (born November 14 1973) is an English composition and language professor of the University of West Bohemia. He was born in Alabama. He’s notable due to an academic scandal that erupted within his Southern Literary community. The collection of short stories, The Bear Bryant Funeral Train was awarded the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction from the University of Georgia Press, however, the award was cancelled and the collection was later returned after certain parts of the tale were claimed to have been copied from earlier works written by Carl Carmer.
In the latter part of 2004 Vice’s short-story collection The Bear Bryant Funeral Train received the Flannery O’Connor Short-Fiction Award at The University of Georgia Press. The Press published the collection in the latter part of 2005. Kirkus Reviews, in a highly rated review, described it as a “distinguished and disturbing work, from a lavishly gifted new writer.” Publishers Weekly agreed: “Vice has a gift for making the extraordinary plausible, for rendering complex motivations in spare but metaphoric language and searing details.”
