He was his European super-lightweight title two times from 2001 to 2009; as well as the European Union Welterweight title from 2012 until 2013 and the European world title for welterweight from 2014 until 2016, and was a challenger twice to win the world title in 2004 and 2006. Gianluca has the older brother of boxer Silvio Branco.
After he had stepped into the weight division, Branco made his first of two attempts to win the European world title at welterweight on March 26, 2010 but he lost by defeat over Matthew Hatton. On the 10th of November, 2012 Branco was awarded the unclaimed European Union welterweight title with an UD against Krzysztof Bienias. After defending on February 22, 2013, Branco won the form of a UD victory over Lukasz Maciec. On November 22, 2014 Branco was successful in his third attempt to win the vacant European Welterweight title by making Rafal Jackiewicz to leave his corner after just six rounds.

Branco did not make a defense on the 19th of December, 2008, defeating Juho Tolppola over nine tough rounds.

Branco began his career on April 7 1995 by knocking out Aladar Horvath over six rounds. The majority of his fights were in his home country of Italy Branco would go on to spend the next nine years unbeaten except for a points draw with Viktor Baranov on 19 October 1998. Branco was the winner of the first significant regional title–the vacant European light-welterweight title, on 23 June 2001, with a major verdict victory against Gabriel Mapouka. Two successful fights for the title were attempted, in the fight against George Scott on 17 November 2001 (sixth-round technical decision) and Allan Vester on 9 March 2002 (tenth-round stoppage).
On January 24, 2004 Branco was a fighter for his first world title–the vacant WBC light-welterweight title, against the veteran Arturo Gatti. Branco was also making his first journey in his home country of the United States, where Gatti was a well-known world champion. Branco began well and was able to counterpunch the combos of Gatti until Gatti hurt his hand badly after hitting Branco’s hip during round five. Gatti was forced to rely upon his punch to keep him out of danger for the rest of the fight. In the tenth round in a fight that was still very close, Gatti turned the tide dramatically in his favor by scoring an unforced knockdown on Branco. After twelve rounds Gatti took a unanimous victory (UD) to give Branco the first defeat of his career.
