He is renowned for prosecuting and securing the conviction of Byron De La Beckwith, accused of the murder of the activist for civil rights Medgar Evers on June 12, 1963. Two previous trials were held in Mississippi in 1964 ended in juries that were hung.
On the 13th of November in 2009 DeLaughter received a sentence of 18 months federal imprisonment through the judge Glen Davidson. According to the recommendations of his plea agreement the judge Davidson did not apply a financial penalty against DeLaughter due to his lack of net worth. DeLaughter was inside the prison of the federal government at McCreary and released on April 13th in 2011.
The 28th of March, 2008 DeLaughter was removed from the bench for an indefinite period from the Mississippi Supreme Court due to allegations of corruption and judicial misconduct.
