After graduating from high secondary school Mayer got accepted into West Point, the United States Military Academy at West Point. In West Point, he was a top performer with the top 10% of his class. He earned an undergraduate degree Psychology degree in the year 1981. Later, he earned a Master’s degree in Education from Austin Peay State University.
In September 2004 Mayer was introduced to romance novelist Jennifer Crusie at a writer’s conference in Maui. The two authors worked on a trilogy of romantic novels that were based on military themes including Don’t Look Down (2006), Agnes and the Hitman (2007) along with Wild Ride (2009). Mayer and Crusie’s collaborations were conducted via email in which Mayer writing from a male perspective , and Crusie writing scenes from the female viewpoint. Agnes and The Hitman was a NYT bestseller which earned Mayer an honorary place in the Romance Writers of America Honor Roll.
Under the pseudonym Robert Doherty, Mayer released Area 51. He created 8 sequels for Area 51 from 1998 to 2004.

As a member of the Army, Mayer served in the infantry unit of his unit, the 1st Cavalry Division, later as a platoon commander and brigade recon leader of a platoon. Mayer became a part of Special Forces and commanded a Green Berets A-Team from 1984 until 1988. He was the Operations Officer for the 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and as a member of Special Operations Command (Special Projects) in Hawaii. He then instructed Green Beret recruits at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and at the School at Fort Bragg, NC.
Mayer was the first writer to be published in the year 1991 by publishing the The Green Beret book Eyes of the Hammer. The following year, he released another novel, Dragon Sim-13. In all, nine books have been published in the Dragon Sim-13 series.
In 2009, Mayer realized a rapidly evolving digital transition in the publishing industry was happening. Along with Jen Talty, Mayer formed Cool Gus Publishing (formerly Who Dares Wins Publishing) in 2010 as a platform to reissue his extensive backlist. Cool Gus Publishing authors currently include Colin Falconer, Jennifer Probst, Janice Maynard and Amy Shojai.
