In the style of Gretzky the defender would close the year with 48 and 46 assists, resulting in 94 points which was good enough for 10th place in the league. In 1977-78, MacDonald was traded back to the Oilers and he had another great season, scoring the score of 68 and 34 goals. At the beginning of the 1978-79 season Edmonton made a deal with 17-year-old superstar Wayne Gretzky, who dominated the game for nearly two decades.
