William Neil Scanlon (born November 13th 1956) was an ex-tennis athlete of his native United States, who won seven singles and two doubles titles throughout his professional career that lasted 13 years. He was a right-handed player who reached his highest career ATP singles rank at World No. 9 in January of 1984. He also is known for overcoming top seeded John McEnroe in the fourth round of the 1983 US Open.

Scanlon was at his peak in 1983, when he made it to his semi-final in the US Open. He beat Henrik Sundstrom, Chris Lewis, Pat Cash, John McEnroe and Mark Dickson before losing to Jimmy Connors.

In 1985 Scanlon underwent two knee surgeries, missing most of the season. He continued to compete through 1989, winning only one more singles title, the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.

Scanlon has been a professional investment advisor since 1992. He is founder and principal of Advantage Capital Advisors LLC, a registered investment advisor in Los Angeles, California. He was formerly the senior partner of The Scanlon Group, a top wealth management team at UBS Financial in Los Angeles.

Scanlon won a gold match against Marcos Hocevar of Brazil in the opening stage of the WCT Gold Coast Classic at Delray Beach, Florida on February 22nd 1983. Scanlon was victorious with a score of 6-1 or 6-1. Golden sets are the player who wins the set without dropping one point. The feat is noted within the Guinness Book of World Records. The only other people to have done it are Tine Scheuer-Larsen Yaroslava Shvedova and Julian Reister have since repeated the feat.

Following his victory at the NCAA Singles championships in 1976 as a sophomore player for Trinity University (upsetting UCLA’s Peter Fleming), Scanlon turned professional and, in his debut Grand Prix event, defeated world number 7 Harold Solomon to reach the quarterfinals. The first time he ever achieved an ATP Singles rankings was at No. 154. The following summer, Scanlon defeated world no. 4 Adriano Panatta in the US Open and, with two victories over former world No. 1 Ilie Nastase in the early part of 1977, made it up to No. 23 in March 1977.

After a disappointing year that ended in the year 1978 Scanlon returned in his last event of the year to win his title on Maui with victories over John McEnroe, Harold Solomon and Peter Fleming. In 1979, he made it to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon (losing in the quarter-finals to Jimmy Connors) before successfully winning his title back in Maui by winning against Fleming during the championship.

Scanlon has been named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Hall of Fame and the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame. His Golden Set achievement is represented in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. He served on the ATP Board of Directors during his professional career and also founded the Dallas Youth Foundation in 1984 to provide sports activities to Dallas area youth featuring professional tennis players, Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks, and Olympic athletes. He has also served on the board of the Southern California Tennis Association and the USTA Davis Cup committee. He was chairman of the Carl Reiner Celebrity Pro-Am and was co-founder of the Beverly Hills Invitational Charity Event.
