William Alexander “Whip” Lochead (born on the 13th of October 1954, in Forest, Ontario) is an ex-ice hockey player and agent for current hockey players. He began his hockey career as a junior in 1969-70 playing with the Sarnia Bees of OHA Western Jr. B league. In 1970-71 , he established his current Western Jr. B goal record for scoring 72 goals across 42 games. Lochead was picked 2nd overall by his team the OHA Oshawa Generals in 1971. He was later drafted first (9th in the overall draft) in the Detroit Red Wings in the 1974 NHL draft. He was also picked as 3rd (32nd in the overall rankings) from the Indianapolis Racers in the 1974 WHA draft. He was also known for his nickname Billy Lochead during his playing time with the NHL and was referred to as “Whip”.
From 1980 to 1981, Lochead decided to try his luck abroad. He signed up to the most prestigious level of ice hockey in Germany The Bundesliga. He was a member of Kolner EC and only played for 17 games prior to transferring into ESV Kaufbeuren. He concluded the season scoring 43 goals over 39 games, and scored five points during Kaufbeuren’s brief playoff run. In the off-season, Lochead was acknowledged as a player who was knowledgeable about the game well and could be a star when given the opportunity. He moved from EC Bad Nauheim for the 1981-82 campaign and was not disappointed. Lochead scored scores of 66 goals and 34 assists in just 42 games. He was by far the most prolific player on the team as well as the league, yet Bad Nauheim failed to make the playoffs. Lochead would be the league’s top scorer in both goal and penalty minute. He would also be awarded the league MVP. Lochead would then transfer in his off season to Mannheimer ERC, one of the most successful clubs in the league. He continued scoring goals, however at a slower pace as Mannheim also had scorers like Manfred Wolf and Doug Berry and he was chosen by Mannheim fans as their team’s MVP for 1982-83. Lochead continued to play for the team until he returned back to Bad Nauheim EC for the 1984-85 season. Bad Nauheim was now in the lower-end of the 2nd Bundesliga and Lochead once again discovered his elusive scoring skills. He played his final three seasons of hockey with the club and put up his highest points until now during the 1985-86 campaign. In just 45 games, Lochead scored 49 assists and scored 71 goals totalling 120 points over the season. In the spring of 1986, the team was selected with Team Canada. Dave King coached Team Canada in the Pravda Cup tournament in Leningrad (now St.Petersburg, Russia). After a brief stint in the club Chur and the Schweizerischer Eishockeyverband and the Vienna Capitals of the Austrian Hockey League, Lochead was let go of the ice following his 1987-88 hockey season.
After being absent for the beginning in the 1978-1979 NHL season because of knee injuries sustained in training camp, Lochead could not get his game back to the same level of his previous season. was deemed a waiver player with the Colorado Rockies on February 9 the 9th of February, 1979. He was to play the last 26 games in the season with Colorado. In the off-season, he was transferred for the New York Rangers but ended playing in just seven games during the season, as the majority of the season playing for the New Haven Nighthawks of the American Hockey League. In the league’s lower tier, he had 46 assists and drafted on the AHL’s inaugural all-star team. Lochead was a major contributor to the Nighthawks scoring goals in the playoffs in the year that he played, however the team lost in the semi-finals to eventual champions Hershey Bears. Lochead also received his “Minor League Player of the Year Award” in the same season.

Lochead began his Jr. career as a player in his team, the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey Association. He joined the league in the year 1971, but was shut down by injuries by the start of 1971’s season. But once he returned to health, Lochead started scoring, since he scored 110 points, with 56 goals in 1972-73 . He then scored 121 points and the score of 57 goals between 1973 and

Lochead decided to try his hand at coaching after retiring as a player. He filled in as a midseason replacement for ESC Wolfsburg in 1988 and remained with them the following season. He led the team to a 16–12–4 record in 1988–89. Lochead again crossed the Atlantic to coach for two teams in Switzerland within the Schweizerischer Eishockeyverband. After coaching Solothurn and Olten he returned to Germany to coach Sauerland Iserlohn ECD in the 1993–94 season. After one season with Sauerland he moved back into the top league of Germany, the DEL. He was head coach of the Ratinger Löwen from the 1994–95 season until 1996–97. In 1995-96 Lochead led the team to a surprising 10th-place finish in the 18 team league with the smallest budget in the league. Unfortunately, the team was plagued with financial problems which affected the team’s performance and he was let go after Ratingen found themselves as the worst team in the league in 1996–97. Lochead coached Kassel Huskies of the DEL to a .520 win percentage record in 1997–98. He ended his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Frankfurt Lions of the DEL in 1998–1999. He is now a successful hockey player agent living in Frankfurt Germany.
