Ben Liebrand is one of the most popular and richest Club Dj who was born on September 27, 1960 in Nijmegen, Netherlands. Ben Liebrand (Dutch pronunciation: [‘ben ‘li.brant[‘ben ‘li.brant ) (born 27 September 1959 at Nijmegen, the Netherlands) is a Dutch DJ of dance music and remixer. He has remixed tracks for artists such as Forrest and M.C. Miker G and DJ Sven and remixed tracks by artists like Michael Jackson, Salt-N-Pepa, Sting, TLC, Fun Fun, Tavares, Bill Withers, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, George Aaron, Rick Astley, SWV and Phil Collins. He has charted tracks himself, one example being Ben Liebrand’s take on “Eve of the War”.

On April 1, 1983 Liebrand got a job with Dutch Radio station Radio Veronica, producing a weekly mix show that was titled “In The Mix.” The show ran for one hour every week at 2am it ran from the beginning of 1983 until November 1985. From the radio show, regular programs like”Grandmix” were developed “Grandmix”, a yearly mix of the most popular dance tracks from the year, were created. The entire month was spent to plan the mix, record and mix it was the very initial Grandmix was broadcast towards close of the year 1983 but technical problems almost ended the event before it even began. When he arrived on the Veronica Studio, Liebrand discovered that he’d forgotten the second tape that the Grandmix ’83 was recorded. He did however possess a tape of a recently completed “High Fashion Dance Mix” on his person, and it was from it that the second segment of the Grandmix’83 was recorded. Then, in January of 1984 the Grandmix 1983′ was broadcast completely. “Grandmix” developed into a iconic occasion for Radio Veronica and Liebrand, continuing through 1992.

In 1984, Liebrand also started making shorter remixes for the Friday evening ‘Curry & Van Inkel show’, later the ‘Stenders & Van Inkel show’ (both on that station). His “In the Minimix” was always played at “two records past nine” (twee platen over negen) and formed an important part of the popular radioshow. These minimixes were either three/four track mixes (never exceeding fifteen minutes in total) or remixes of popular chart records at the time.

After producing the final “Grandmix” in 1992, Liebrand felt frustrated with lack of feedback that his mixes were gaining. “You didn’t know what people thought of it. 30 days fulltime working on the Grandmix in December, ten to twelve hours a day mixing. On 31 December it was finished, and the last years when I entered the broadcast studios, everybody was busy doing something else, not really interested, and only the technician who was on duty, sat with me in the broadcast room. I plugged in my gear, pressed play around six o’clock, and after an hour I disconnected it again, and took off. Having sat there for one hour, solely with the technician, it was the biggest anti-climax ever. This could be compared to making a piece of art, walking up to a bridge and throwing it in the river, without knowing the people’s opinions about it.”

His longest stay to date “The Keizer Karel” (1980-1988) performed a five-hour set every night following the time when the club was first open. He continued DJing along with the help of his sibling Rita Liebrand, at “The Hippodrome” Hennef, Germany (1990-1995). The last time he was a resident was in”Disco Inferno,” a club in “Disco Inferno” (2000-2004). Ben is still a DJ and has a specialization in key-mixing with four Pioneer CD players at once.

Liebrand started his DJ career in 1976 when he was just 16 years old, with his portable set-up, “The B. Liebrand Audio Studio” performing events in his home town of Nijmegen. After two years, when the time came for him to attend nightclubs regularly moving between mobile discos and a nightclub’s residency performing in the “Juicy Lucy” nightclub (1978-1979). At that point it was still the case that he let one track play to another without mixing beats. However, in 1979, he took on an ongoing regular residency in “The Kwien” (pronounced ‘The Queen’) nightclub (1979-1980). In that time, Liebrand learned the art of mixing from Kwien resident Huib Luiten.

His radio show “In The Mix” was the first non-stop mixed show that aired on Dutch National Radio in 1983. Early listeners were Armin van Buuren and Tiësto, who have cited Liebrand as their main reason for entering the music business. “In The Mix” also spawned an annual yearmix with 100+ tracks called “The Grandmix.” The first series of Grandmixes aired from 1983 to 1992 and later versions from 1999 on are also released on CD.
