Ben Hesen is one of the most popular and richest American swimmer who was born on February 15, 1986 in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. In his junior year, Hesen was second in the NCAA Championships in the 100 backstroke, setting a school record of 45.45 and placed 8th in the 200-back. He became one of the few IU swimmer in the backstroke since 1979 make it to the finals in two individual events at the NCAA Championships. He was awarded first-team All-America recognition with the backstroke 100 yards, as well as the 200-yard backstroke as well as honorable mention honors in both Medley relays. He was the winner of the Big Ten championship in the 100 back, completing the race in record-setting time for the league (45.52). He earned All-Big Ten first team honors, led Indiana with 24 event wins on the season, was named CollegeSwimming.com’s National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 1, and went undefeated in the 100 back during the regular season. Hesen established the American record during his 2008 US Olympic Trials in the 50 meter backstroke with a time of 24.70 in the 50-split in the 100-backstroke time trial. He was the winner of the NCAA Championship in the 100 backstroke, setting a school record of 44.72. The win was his first NCAA swimming championship to Indiana Hoosiers after Jim Montgomery captured the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle in 1976. He was awarded the Indiana male Athlete of the Year accolade. He was named Big Ten co-Big Ten Swimmer of the Year as well as Swimmer of the Championships after winning championships at the backstroke events of 100 and 200 100 butterfly , and 200 Medley relay (1:25.85).
