Godfrey was first called up to the England national team’s under-20 team ahead of their 2018-19 U 20 Elite League fixtures against Poland and Portugal in March 2019. Godfrey made his debut during the 3-1 loss at home against Poland.

On August 24, 2017 Godfrey was signed by League One club Shrewsbury Town on loan until the 1st of January 2018. The loan was extended until the end of the season.

Godfrey played for his team York & District under-13 team which defeated Southampton on the pitch at Stadium MK in the final of the English Schools’ FA Inter-Association Trophy in May 2011. It marked the very first occasion that that a team from York was able to win in an English Schools’ Football competition. The team began his career in York City’s youth program and then moved to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2011. After being let go at the request of the club, Godfrey went on tests for Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday and then returned to York at the under-15 level and began his college scholarship. Godfrey was York’s captain for the under-18 squad during the 2014-15 season even though he was still a first-year scholar. His first time playing for the team was as an uninvolved substitute during an League Two match against Newport County on October 11, 2014. Godfrey was made debut at 17 in York’s 1-0 win at home against Yeovil Town on 18 August 2015. He scored his debut goals in the game for York within the 8th minute the stoppage time in a 2-1 defeat at home at Plymouth Argyle on 14 November 2015 after a strike of 10 yards.

Godfrey signed for Premier League club Norwich City on 15 January 2016 on a three-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee and would initially play in their academy team. The debut came on the 23rd August as a substitute the 65th minute in Norwich’s EFL Cup second round match against Coventry City and scored in the 87th minute of the 6-1 victory at home with an effort that came from the outside of the penalty box. Godfrey was a league player in the victory at home 2-0 against Birmingham City on 28 January 2017 as a substitute in the 81st minute. He signed a four-year deal with Norwich on the 11th of August, 2017, and will stay with Norwich until the end of 2021.
