Barbara Stevens is one of the most popular and richest Basketball Coach who was born on September 20, 1954 in Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States. Barbara Stevens (born September 20 1954) is currently the director of basketball for the Bentley University women’s basketball team. Stevens was previously head basketball coach at Clark University and Massachusetts. Stevens was admitted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in the year 2006. She was inducted into be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.
Stevens was recruited to Bentley in the year 1986. The first year she was an excellent year, when the team compiled the score of 24-5. The following year, the team was able to win 28 games. In 1988, her team began a string with 30 or more wins every year.
In March 2018, Bentley University made the decision to name the basketball court in the Dana Athletic Center after Stevens. At the naming ceremony, the president of the University, Gloria Cordes Larson said, “Coach Stevens has arguably become one of the top five coaches in the history of all women’s basketball — and certainly the best ever in NCAA Division II. It’s hard to imagine that anyone will ever come close to replicating the success she and her program have achieved.”
In January 2018, Stevens became the fifth women’s basketball coach to reach the 1,000 win milestone. Bentley defeated Adelphi University 78–66. Bentley had lost to Adelphi in their last four meetings.
She assumed the coach’s duties as head coach in Massachusetts in 1983. She took over the team with an average of 5-22 the previous season. Under Stevens direction the team was able to improve its record to 10-17 but did not reach their .500 mark. Despite their modest performance Stevens’ abilities in coaching were acknowledged. When she was in her last year as a coach at Massachusetts the team she coached took on Connecticut that was then not an established basketball power. They were guided by Geno Auriemma. She went on to be recognized as a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and The Basketball Hall of Fame, and twice named an Olympic coach, however at the time, he was still in his first year as an assistant coach. This was his seventh game as an assistant coach. He pointed out that Massachusetts had defeated UConn in the previous year, and was leading by a significant margins in this game. Then , he realized that “something clicked” and the players started applying the lessons they had learned in their practice. UConn won the game 62-59. Auriemma considers it to be one of his most memorable memories. He also said of UMass, “they are a good team, well coached by Barbara Stevens. She’s great.”

Stevens began her career in coaching as an assistant coach for Clark University in 1976. Clark University was not well-known for its basketball team, but she was instrumental in helping the team to win the Massachusetts Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW) Division III State Championship. The team’s had a record of 14-5. Stevens was appointed head coach the following season. She was the director at Clark for six seasons , winning three MAIAW championships and 5 postseason games. The team twice made it to the NCAA Division III Final Four. At the end of her time at Clark she was awarded coach of the year by the WBCA coach of the year in district 1.
Stevens went to the college in Bridgewater State College located in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, graduating in 1976. She was on the school’s basketball squad as a guard and was later named captain. She recalled the experiences, “Those of us who were interested in sports did play, but in front of very few people and with very little fanfare and very little notice. How we practiced, the amount of time and what we did to get ready for season are just so different now.” Alongside basketball, she played softball for two years, and also played on the tennis team during two seasons, where she was captain as well.
In 2014, the team went undefeated with a 35–0 record. Bentley reached the national championship game against West Texas A&M. With under six minutes remaining, the team was losing by nine points. One of the players asked the coach if they could go into their full-court pressure defense. Three of the players had four fouls, making such a tactic dangerous but they implemented the press and it was effective. Late in the game, Lauren Battista scored a three-pointer to put the Falcons ahead, then stole the inbounds pass and scored to give Bentley a 65–61 lead to put them ahead for good. The win gave Stevens her first national championship.
