In 2000, Mittler was awarded the Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz-Prize of the German Research Foundation and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research for her outstanding research. Between 2002 and 2004, she was awarded the Heisenberg Fellowship granted to her by the German Research Foundation. The year 2009 was the year that Mittler won the Henry Allen Moe Prize of the American Philosophical Society for her article Popular Propaganda? Art and Culture in Revolutionary China. In this article, Mittler addresses the question what the propaganda items from Mao Zedong’s era, a painful time of suffering are now well-known in China and the reason Mao has become a mythological persona.

Barbara Mittler (born 15 February 1968 in Hagen, West Germany) is a German sinologist. She is Co-director of the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”.
Following her thesis during 1994 Mittler became an associate professor of Heidelberg University, where she was awarded habilitation in 1998. Mittler continued her work as the associate professor. The year 2004, Mittler was promoted to permanent professor of the Institute of Chinese Studies, where she was director until the fall of 2012. The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”, Mittler became the speaker for the research field “Public Spheres” in 2007. Since November 2012, she is the Cluster’s Co- Director.
