In a critical review in Engelking’s work Such a Beautiful Sunny Day: Jews Seeking Refuge in the Polish Countryside, 1942-1945 (2016) originally made available in Polish in 2012, Grzegorz Rossolinski-Liebe wrote that it challenges his German tendency to ignore Holocaust perpetrators who are not German and it challenged the Polish tendency to see Poles living in the German-occupied Poland exclusively as victims. In 2013, historian Samuel Kassow described Engelking’s work as well as those of three other experts (Jan Grabowski, Alina Skibinska, and Dariusz Libionka) as an “historical achievement of the first order” and a challenge to “the self-serving myths about Polish-Jewish relations in World War II”.
The book by Engelking, The Warsaw Ghetto: A Guide to the Perished City (2009), written by Jacek Leociak, contains precise map of the Ghetto to ensure that the readers can find the streets and the former community structures. Michael Marrus described it as “a stunning work, one of the most important books on the history of the Nazi Holocaust”.
Since 1993, Engelking was an associate professor and assistant instructor in The Polish Center for Holocaust Research which is which is part of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Since 2014, she’s been the chair of the Polish International Auschwitz Council [pl] . From November 2015 through April 2016 it was her turn to be in the position of Ina Levine Invitational Scholar at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Mandel Center in Washington, D.C.

Barbara Engelking (born 1962) is a Polish sociologist who is specialized on Holocaust studies. She is the founder and director of the Polish Center for Holocaust Research in Warsaw she is the editor or author of several publications about Holocaust research and the Holocaust that took place in Poland.
In Warsaw, Engelking received an M.A. in Psychology in Warsaw’s University of Warsaw in 1988 and an Ph.D. on sociology, both from the Polish Academy of Sciences, which is also located in Warsaw with an essay on The Experience of the Holocaust and its Implications in Autobiographical accounts (1993).
In 2018 Engelking and Grabowski co-edited Dalej jest noc: losy Żydów w wybranych powiatach okupowanej Polski (“Night Continues: the Fate of Jews in Selected Counties of Occupied Poland”), a two-volume, 1,600-page study of nine counties in German-occupied Poland during the Holocaust.
