Bang Soo- hyun (Hangul: bangsuhyeon, Hanja: Fang Zhu Xian , born on September 13 1972, in Seoul) is an ex-badminton participant who hails from South Korea who was one of the most prominent women’s singles players in the 1990s. She was a close friend and adversary of Indonesia’s Susi Susanti as well as the Chinese’s Ye Zhaoying and recorded wins over both of them in important badminton tournaments. She was noted for her style, which included impressive strength and speed her retirement from competitive play after winning the 1996 Atlanta Olympics shortly prior to her birthday. She was inducted into the World Badminton Hall of Fame in the year 2019.
Bang was also a participant at her in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She took home her gold in the women’s singles, and did not lose a match in any game she played, beating Susi Susanti in the semifinals 11-9 eleven-8 as well as Mia Audina in the final 11-6,11-7.
Bang took home her fourth Quadrennial Asian Games in 1994, as well as the famous All England Open Badminton Championships against Ye Zhaoying in 1996, after finishing second in close games in 1994 and 1992. Other titles she won were those of the Welsh (1989), Hong Kong (1992), South Korea (1993 1994 and 1994,), Swedish (1993, 1994) in addition to the Canadian (1995) open championships.

Bang was a badminton player in 1992’s Summer Olympics in the women’s singles. She was a bye player in the opening round, beat Catrine Bengtsson from Sweden during the next round, and Hisuko Mizui from Japan during the 3rd. In the quarterfinals, Bang Soo-hyun edged Sarwendah Kusumawardhani from Indonesia 11-2 3-11, 12-11 in order to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, she defeated the current World champ Tang Jiuhong of China 11-3 11-2. At the end of the competition, she fell in the final to Indonesia’s Susi Susanti, 11-5 5-11, 3-11 and 5-11 and took home the silver medal.
She was awarded two medals at her participation in the IBF World Championships, in 1993 she won a silver award as the runner-up behind Susanti and in 1995 she won a bronze medal.
