Banana Yoshimoto (Ji Ben banana, Yoshimoto Banana) (born the 24th of July, 1964) is the pen name of Japanese writer Mahoko Yoshimoto (Ji Ben ZhenXiu Zi Yoshimoto Mahoko) . From 2002 to 2015 she was writing her name in the form of hiragana (yoshimoto banana ).
The novel was published in November of 1987. Yoshimoto was awarded the Kaien Newcomers’ Literary Award for Kitchen. In 1988 the novel was nominated in the Mishima Yukio Prize, and in 1999, it was awarded the 39th Recommendation from the minister of Education for the Best Newcomer Artist. The year 1988 (January) Yoshimoto was awarded an Izumi Kyoka Prize for Literature, for her book Moonlight Shadow, which is included in the majority of copies of Kitchen.
Her debut work, Kitchen (1988), had over 60 printings in Japan alone. There have been two film adaptations: a Japanese TV movie and a more widely released version titled Wo ai chu fang, produced in Hong Kong by Ho Yim in 1997.
