Aziza Brahim is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on June 9, 1976 in Tindouf, Algeria. Her birth was in 1976 within the Sahrawi refugee camps within the Tindouf region of Algeria where her mother moved to in the latter part of 1975 after fleeing an oppressive Moroccan military occupation in Western Sahara. Her father was within El Aaiun where he later passed away. Because of his involvement in the Western Sahara War, Aziza was never able to meet him.
In 2009 she was one of the finalist in the Freedom to Create Prize, that recognizes the potential of art in fighting discrimination, dispel stereotypes, and strengthen confidence in society. In April of 2012, she took home the Malaga Spanish Film Festival Best Original Soundtrack Silver Biznaga for her score from the film Wilaya.
In February 2012, Reaktion released Brahim’s first LP, entitled “Mabruk” in honor of her grandmother, for June. In April, Efe Eme magazine reported that Brahim would take part in the 2012 edition of the WOMAD Cáceres festival.
In 2014 Aziza Brahim released her third album Soutak (Glitterbeat, 2014), an acoustic record featuring musicians from both the Barcelona and Malian music scenes and incorporating Malian, Spanish, Cuban and contemporary Anglo- European influences in addition to Brahim’s traditional Sahrawi sound. Soutak topped the World Music Charts Europe (WMCE) three times (March, April and May 2014).
At age 11 she was granted the opportunity to study at Cuba in the same way as other Sahrawi students of the time. She was interested in studying the art of music but she was turned down. She dropped out of school and returned to refugee camps in the year 1995, working on her music career. Since 2000, she has been in Spain initially in Leon and then Barcelona. She is married and has one daughter.

In 1995, she won the “1st National Song Contest”, in the National Culture Festival of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. She was then a part of in the “National Sahrawi Music Group” and toured Mauritania as well as Algeria. In 1998, she contributed 2 songs for the v.v.a.a. album “A pesar de las heridas”. The following year, she was touring Europe with her Sahrawi group Leyoad and Leyoad, touring Spain, France and Germany. In 1999, she returned to the refugee camps to record an episode for Sahrawi National Radio with Tuareg musicians from Tamanrasset, Algeria. From 2001 to 2003 she played with Leyoad throughout Spain, France and Germany together with Leyoad. The year 2005 was the first time she performed together with Spanish Latin jazz group Yayabo. In 2007, she formed her own band Gulili Mankoo, composed of musicians from Western Sahara, Spain, Colombia or Senegal mix the traditional African music with rock and blues, recording with them in 2008 for her debut solo album which was”Mi Canto,” her debut EP “Mi Canto”. In 2009, she co-wrote one of the songs from the v.v.a.a. EP of rap “Interrapcion – Crisol 09” The song from the EP was included on the compilation album “Listen to the Banned”. From 2009 on, Aziza Brahim has been frequently touring Spain and France together with the Basque Txalaparta group Oreka Tx, in the “Nomadak Tx en directo” tour.
In 2011, she became involved in the Spanish film Wilaya, composing, producing and interpreting the original soundtrack, as well as acting for the first time in a film.
