Awa Thiam is one of the most popular and richest Writer who was born on April 1, 1950 in Senegal. Awa Thiam (born 1936) is a Senegalese politician and academic, writer, and activist. She is the Director of the National Center for Assistance and Training of Women under the Ministry of Women and Children. She is a proponent of female Genital mutilation (FGM) and is quoted in her book from 1978 La Parole aux negresses (also released in English in 1986 under the title Black Sisters, Speak Out Feminism and Occupation within Black Africa). Her collection of writings that are published internationally and in the two languages of French in French and English. The year 1982 was the time she created in 1982 the Commission pour l’Abolition des Mutilations Sexuelles (CAMS also known as the Commission for the Abolition of Sexual Mutilation and in English) and is a campaign to end FGM. Thiam is one of the women who are featured in an annual collection called Daughters of Africa.
To improve the quality of life and standing for African females, Thiam has been a pioneer member in the Commission of the Abolition of Sexual Mutilation (also called CAMS as well as Commission pour l’Abolition des Mutilations Sexuelles in French) of African women, later disbanded and revived as CAMS- International. She has spoken extensively about female Genital mutilation (FGM) which she claims it is just an unveiled way of controlling patriarchal power. In her piece for International Social Science Journal, Thiam writes: “the purpose of these practices, whether it is admitted or not, is to control female sexuality. Some indeed do not hesitate to say that the aim is to reduce women’s hyper-sensuality. In any case the result remains the same: to make the young girl essentially a future reproductive and productive element. Hence, her life is taken over and mapped out for her from birth to death by a patriarchal society, which ensures that she is kept in her place at all stages of her development.”
Although there were many elements that influenced the decision but the country of Senegal actually did have a ban on FGM in January 1999 as a reaction to women who spoke about the practice. But, it’s said that, while it was an important political win the decision could be because the most populous group in power at the time the Wolof were not a part of FGM. There is still a huge nationwide opposition against the elimination of FGM. Awa Thiam continues to improve health and wellbeing for the nation of Senegal as Minister of Health and Social Action, and as Chair of the Committee .

Thiam is a fervent advocate for abolishing female Genital mutilation (FGM). She has written a book Black Sisters, Speak Out: Feminism and Oppression in Black Africa (also published in English as Speak Out, Black Sisters: Feminism and Oppression in Black Africa), which was first printed by the French government as French in the form of La Parole aux negresses in 1978, tackles the issue in detail. The book, among the first in its genre contains interviews with survivors and advocates for changes. It also gives a verdict on patriarchy’s incitement to violence against women by women, and states it is “it would seem that males have forced women to become their own torturers, to butcher each other.”
With multiple degrees earned overseas, Thiam returned to Senegal and was appointed Associate Director of Research for the Fundamental Institute of Black Africa at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar. The year 1987 was the time Thiam asked the school to create an Department of Anthropology of the Sexes however, her proposal was denied by the university administration.
