He briefly relocated into Germany in 1985, and then London in 1986 after which he returned back to Tehran at the age of 1988. The family he grew up with was liberal but not particularly religious but at school, he was taught that there is that there was a literal hell and that even the smallest offense would send him there. The argument was that if afterlife was supposed to last for all eternity, it should be the primary concern during their time on Earth. However, he observed that a small percentage of the people around him even though they claimed to believe in this but did not behave as if that it was of the greatest importance. To avoid death by all means prior to getting to an “age of reason” at 15 (age 9 for girls) He considered suicide because any sin (including suicide) performed prior to that didn’t count regardless of whether it could only lead him to the lowest level of heaven. At the age of 12 Navabi tried suicide by jumping from the window of his school however, he failed. The suicide left him on a crutch for seven months. He also missed an entire year of school.
When 2014 came around, Saudi former Muslim Rana Ahmad was facing difficulties within her family. She was able to seek the assistance from Atheist Republic and other similar organizations online. When her family pressured her to attend an Islamic ritual, she captured pictures of herself holding a piece paper that had “Atheist Republic” written on the back, and standing in Mecca’s Great Mosque of Mecca, the most sacred place of Islam. Then she left for Germany and was assisted by Atheist Republic as well as Faith in Faithless.
In November 2017 the government and the Internet regulator Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had demanded that Atheist Republic’s page and similar atheist pages on Facebook be taken down. However, Facebook refused to do so because the pages did not violate any of the company’s community standards.
In August 2017, a picture from a gathering of the Atheist Republic Consulate of Kuala Lumpur was posted on Atheist Republic’s Facebook page. Deputy Minister of Islamic Affairs Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki ordered an inquiry into whether the people in the photograph had committed apostasy, which is illegal in Malaysia, and ex-Muslims can be fined, jailed or sent for counselling. The next day a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim went as far to say that atheists should be “hunted down” as there was no place for groups like this under the Federal Constitution. Atheist Republic members present at the gathering who received death threats on social media were being investigated about whether they had ‘spread atheism to Muslims’, which has also been outlawed in the country. Navabi asked: “How is this group harming anyone?”, warning that such actions by the government damaged Malaysia’s reputation as a “moderate” Muslim-majority (60%) country. The uploads sparked violent protests from some Malaysians who called Navabi an ‘apostate’ and threatened to behead the Atheist Republic’s leader.
