Her existential Nothing (Danish Intet) novel, first published in Denmark in 2000 and widely criticized in Scandinavia, is also thought to have revolutionized young adult novels. Although initially banned, it has become an international bestseller and is now considered a neoclassic by many critics around the world. Pierre Anthon is the main character of the novel. He sits in a plumtree and proclaims that life is meaningless. The children feel the need to prove Pierre Anthon that life has meaning, which eventually leads to violence. Intet was published in English and German in 2010. Intet won several awards including a Michael L. Printz Honor book for the English edition and a Kulturministeriets Bornebogspris prize for the Danish children’s book in 2001. Her fictional essay War (2004), which was published as a passport about life as a refugee in Europe, has generated much debate. Janne Teller, aged 14, published her first story in Berlingske Tidende’s Danish Daily.
