Ari Lesser is one of the most popular and richest Spoken Word Artist who was born on November 9, 1986 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, United States. Ari Benjamin Lesser (born November 9th, 1986 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio) is a Jewish American rapper, singer, writer and spoken-word performer. Famous for his videos on Israel as well as Jewish Holidays, Lesser has released more than 12 albums, composed numerous original tunes about many different topics, written raps on 200 animals, and produced accurate rhyming translations for Pirke Avot, Psalms, as well as other parts from the Siddur. He continues to perform and give talks at international events.

After graduating, Lesser was contacted by Patrick Duff, a Rastafarian activist and owner of a medical marijuana dispensary from Los Angeles, CA. Duff had bought one of Lesser’s music CDs at a festival earlier that year and was awed by the lyrics of Lesser. Duff offered to fund an album of professional studios and Lesser accepted the offer in the project, and moved away from Eugene, OR to Los Angeles, CA in 2008 to begin working on the project. The album, entitled “The Hippie” was produced by Grammy winner producer Paul Fakhourie, and featured several other artists such as Bob Marley’s drummer Carlton “Santa” Davis.

Lesser returned to Cleveland a number of times between 2009 and 2011, recording several acoustic albums with his father, “Psalms of Ascents,” “Father & Son,” and “Acoustic Bluegrass”. During these years, Lesser also began composing raps about animals, and has now written raps on over 200 different species.

When Lesser returned to the states in late 2012, he became increasingly active on social media. Lesser was relatively unknown in the Jewish community before the release of his YouTube video, “Hanukkah Hip Hop” which garnered 40,000 views in a week. In early 2013, his video “Purim Poetry Slam” comparing Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Haman received 70,000 views in a matter of days.

Since beginning his work with Psalms during 2008 Lesser began to become more attentive and has now identified himself as a baal Teshuva. He made vows of Nazirite pledge in the year 2009 and continues to consider himself an Nazir. He was a student at Chabad yeshivas while living in Israel and is a bit loosely associated with the movement. He calls his self “Lubavitch”.

Lesser began rapping when he was 17 when he was enrolled at Cleveland Heights High School, and began to pursue music as a profession shortly after his arrival at University of Oregon in 2004. While a freshman, Lesser connected with a hip-hop group of Oregon’s Oregon Coast known as “4 Trees” and they formed a group that played in Eugene during his undergraduate days. The lyrics of Lesser during this time were very political and he was often seen rapping at protests and rallies, advocating for sustainability, calling on for justice and social change, while speaking in support of Iraqi war. In one incident, Lesser signed up for a course called “Israel/Palestine” and found it to be heavily biased, with the professor announcing that the class should just be renamed “Palestine”. Other Jewish students immediately dropped out, but Lesser finished the semester, because he felt the class needed to have at least one Jewish voice, and ultimately graduated in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
