Pavel Kulizhnikov is one of the most popular and richest Speed Skater who was born on April 20, 1994 in Vorkuta, Russia. Pavel Aleksandrovich Klizhnikov (Russian name: Pavel Aleksandrovich Klizhnikov born 20 April, 1994) is an Russian speed skater. He took home the 500-meter event for men during the 2015 World Single Distance Championships as and in the 2014 World Sprint Championships, becoming the fastest champion since speed-skating legend Eric Heiden of the United States. The year 2015 saw him was the very first skater in history to complete the 500-meter race in less than 34 seconds and set a new World Record of 33.98. In the year 2020, he became the very first skater who broke 1:06 for the 1000 metres. In the event in 2016 at World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships Kulizhnikov was the winner of the men’s 500 m race and 1000 m races, becoming the first person to be crowned the gold medal in both distances in the same time. In the 2015/16 season, Kulizhnikov participated in the 2015-16 ISU Speed Skating World Cup in Calgary and won the 500 m event with the new Russian records of 34.11. He also took silver in the 1000 meters, bringing the record from 1:07.33. On the 15th of November, 2015 Kulizhnikov set a new world record for the men’s 500m with a time of 34.00 seconds, beating earlier records that was 34.03 established by Jeremy Wotherspoon of Canada in 2007. The next day, in the third World Cup meet in Salt Lake City on the 20th of November 2015, he increased his time to 33.98. He also won the men’s 1000 meters with a new personal best of 1:06.70. Kuliznikov was removed from the race during this year’s ISU World Cup in Inzell due to a virus.

On 8 March 2016 it was reported that Kulizhnikov had failed a drug test, testing positive for meldonium, an anti-ischemic drug added to the World Anti- Doping Agency (WADA)’s banned substances list in 2016. On 13 April, the World Anti-Doping Agency gave amnesty to athletes with the presence of less than 1 microgram of meldonium in doping samples in tests conducted on athletes before 1 March 2016 is acceptable, WADA cites due to uncertainties and lack of studies for how long meldonium stays in the body. On 21 April 2016, the International Skating Union lifted its temporary ban on Kulizhnikov and he was reinstated in the team, since the concentration of meldonium was below the threshold.

In the 2019–20 World Cup season, Kulizhnikov missed out the first two stages due to injury received during practice. He then skipped the following stage in Nur-Sultan. He returned to the ice rink in Nagano, collecting four medals, out of which two were gold ones, in 1000 m and, for the first time, in team sprint. In the 1000 m event he set a track record. In the following Calgary stage he set another track record in the same event.

He competed again during the 2015-16 World Cup in Heerenveen where the gold medals were won in the 500 m and 1000 m with the speed of 1:08.16 (a track record and also a lowland world record). The third day of competition in the 500 m race Kulizhnikov was thrown off the course in the inside corner during his mid-race and placed 20th. Teammate Ruslan Murashov took the win. Kulizhnikov was not hurt by the fall and didn’t have any major injuries. On 29-31 January, Kulizhnikov competed at the ISU World Cup in Stavanger winning gold medals at 500 meters and 1000 m in which he updated his Lowland World Record time of 1:08.10. 11-14 February, during the 2016 World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships in Kolomna, Kulizhnikov won two gold medals in the men’s 500 meters and 1000 m. He became the first person to win gold at both distances in similar speed-skating World Single Distances Championships. On February 26-28, Kulizhnikov retained his Sprint title, winning his World Sprint Championships in 2016. Kulizhnikov was a gifted young athlete and prodigy who won many of in the Junior World Cup in the season of 2010/2011 and 2011/2012. In 2012, at the World Junior Championships in Obihiro, Japan, then 17-year-old Kulizhnikov was awarded silver in the 1500 meters as well as bronze in the 500m, but was later exiled from the results for Doping violations and was suspended for two years . the International Skating Union’s Official Statement was quoted: “In the case of Meldonium, the WADA recognized that there is currently a lack of clear scientific information on excretion time and considers that in certain circumstances there may be grounds for no fault or negligence on the part of the athlete. All mentioned above skaters credibly assured the ISU that they have discontinued the use of Meldonium prior to 1 January 2016, when the substance was included in the prohibited list. In light of the given information, the ISU has decided to lift the provisional suspension imposed on the four skaters, with immediate effect, to stay the results management process and consequently not to disqualify any results at the present stage.”
