Apostolos Tsagkarakis is one of the most popular and richest Swimmer who was born on February 19, 1982 in Athens, Greece. Apostolos Tsagkarakis (Greek: Apostolos Tsagkarakes ; born on 19 February 1982) is an Greek former professional swimmer who was a specialist on sprint events. Considered to be one of Greece’s top swimmers, in a world-class, Tsagkarakis is a 13-time swimming champion, a 12-time All-American winner, and 20-time record-holder for the national record in both butterfly and freestyle (50 and 100 meters). He is also among the two Greek swimmers, along with Spyridon Bitsakis, who coached to compete for the Alabama Crimson Tide, under the head coach Don Gambril, at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

In 2003, at the FINA World Championships, held in Barcelona, Spain, Tsagkarakis was unable to make at least the 16th place in one of his events. He ended up placing forty-sixth in the 50-meter freestyle (23.42) and 40th in the 100 freestyle (51.73).

At the 2005 Mediterranean Games in Almería, Spain, Tsagkarakis helped out his Greek team (Apostolos Antonopoulos, Aristeidis Grigoriadis, and Andreas Zisimos) earned a bronze medal in the freestyle relay, posting a final time of 3:22.95.

Tsagkarakis qualified for the second time in the 50 m freestyle, as a 26-year- old, at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He posted a FINA B-standard entry time of 22.39 from the Akropolis Grand Prix in Athens. He challenged seven other swimmers in heat ten, including four-time Olympian José Meolans of Argentina and 19-year-old Yoris Grandjean of Belgium. He raced again to second place by 0.18 of a second behind Slovenia’s Jernej Godec in 22.39, matching his entry time in the process. Tsagkarakis failed to advance into the semifinals, as he placed twenty-sixth overall in the preliminaries.

Tsagkarakis was a student at in the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on an athletic scholarship. He also played for the Alabama Crimson Tide swimming and diving team, under head coach Don Gambril from 2002 to 2007. When he was competing with the Crimson Tide, he received twelve All-American awards, and set university records for the 50 200, 300, and 400 freestyle events of a mile. In his senior year, Tsagkarakis was chosen by the University to participate of ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Team, after his breakthrough at during the NCAA Swimming Championships. The spring of 2007 Tsagkarakis completed his studies at the University with an undergraduate degree in health management.

In addition to his athletic career, Tsagkarakis worked for numerous institutions across Greece as well as to the United States, where he was a full-time resident for medical procedures within the University of Alabama Medical Center. He also took part in medical mission projects, including that of Hurricane Katrina Relief program, and the Cystic Fibrosis Fund Raiser, an initiative that aimed to aid and help patients suffering from cystic fibrosis. In the latter part of 2000, Tsagkarakis created and supervised the Masters Dream Camp in Athens along with his partner Andrea di Nino, who taught and coached an elite butterfly swimmers, including Olympic gold medalists Milorad Cavic and Yevgeny Korotyshkin.

Tsagkarakis was the first international athlete to compete at 2002’s European Short Course Swimming Championships in Riesa, Germany, where he fell short of medals, finishing fourth in the 50-meter butterfly (23.75).

When his nation Greece hosted the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Tsagkarakis competed only in the 50 m freestyle. He achieved a FINA B-standard of 22.90 from an Olympic test event at the Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre. Despite being delighted by the home crowd, Tsagkarakis came up short in second place and twenty-fourth overall by just 0.13 of a second behind Lithuania’s Rolandas Gimbutis in 24.72.
