Jon Tiven (born January 3 1955 New Haven, Connecticut, United States) is a American musician, composer record producer, composer, as well as a music reporter. He has recorded albums with Wilson Pickett, Frank Black and Don Covay as well as several tribute albums that pay homage to the songwriting talents of Don Covay, Arthur Alexander, Otis Blackwell, Curtis Mayfield as well as Van Morrison. He was also founder of the Memphis power pop group Prix and The Jon Tiven Group and The Yankees and The Jon Tiven Group.

Following the dissolution in Prix, Tiven began working for Big Sound Records, where Tiven produced albums by Van Duren and his own group The Yankees, but losing faith in the people running the label, he decided to become completely independent. Alongside being a part of sessions with musicians like Major Lance (“I’ve Got A Right To Cry”) and The Rolling Stones (“Jivin Sister Fanny”), Tiven honed his skills as a member of the Jim Carroll Band, as an organist/guitarist, and writing along with Carroll the title track for the album’s second (Dry dreams). After being a friend of John Belushi, he formed The Tom Davis Experience featuring Al Franken with the two comedians. He was also given an acting part in the show in addition to writing 5 songs to be used in their movie One More Saturday Night (Columbia Pictures 1986) which was directed by Dan Aykroyd.

After the Jon Tiven Group disbanded, Tiven produced and co-wrote a series of albums with soul/blues singer Ellis Hooks. Moving from New York to Nashville in 2002, he produced a series of albums by Frank Black. In 2004 he produced and co-wrote what would become Little Milton’s last recorded effort Think Of Me, which was released in 2005 and received four W.C. Handy Awards in 2006 including Song of the Year and Album of the Year. In 2006, he produced Sailover, by P.F. Sloan for Hightone Records, as well as What I Was Running From, the debut album by Indiana singer/songwriter Don Pedigo. He continued to have his songs recorded by soul and blues artists, including Billy Price, Ricky Fanté, Gigi Dover, Hard Bargain featuring Arthur Canady, Rock Bottom, and Jim Quick & Coastline.

In 2007, Tiven produced and co-wrote Intuition, the first recordings in thirty-seven years by soul singer Betty Harris. He continued his work with Ellis Hooks by producing Another Saturday Morning, the sixth album by the Alabama soul-blues musician. Tiven also helmed the chart-topping American debut Sofa King Badass by Mason Casey. Touring Europe with a new band Jon Tiven & the Nashville Aces, he introduced his nine-piece outfit backing Ellis, Betty, and Mack Rice. In 2007, Tiven produced an album by former Grass Roots member Creed Bratton (also known as a cast member of the television show The Office).

Other artists like Rick Derringer, Barrence Whitfield & The Savages as well as The Symptoms started recording his songs as well. Tiven focused on primarily creating music for artists other than his own. In 1985, he returned to the friendship with his idol Don Covay, and they composed, performed and recorded in 2001. A record label approached him to record his own album and he formed the Jon Tiven Group who recorded two albums, Blue Guru and Yes I Ram in the years 1996 and 1999, respectively. The band consisted of Jon Tiven on guitar, Alan Merrill on lead vocals, Todd Snare on drums and Tiven’s wife Sally Tiven on bass. Tiven began to enjoy some Billboard Hot 100 chart success with songs that were covered by Huey Lewis and the News and the Jeff Healey Band. Tiven was then able to submit a couple of tracks to B.B. King for recording. The recordings Tiven composed and produced by B.B. King were released in a variety of releases which included Here and There, a European release Lucille & Friends, and the Grammy-award-winning collection King of the Blues. From then on, Tiven began to stand out as a blues and soul genres, writing and composing new albums from Don Covay, Syl Johnson, Donnie Fritts, Freddie Scott along with Mack Rice, among others. He dragged Arthur Alexander out of retirement in the year 1990, and then, in 1998, he produced and wrote Wilson Pickett’s debut album in over 17 years, called It’s Harder Now that was awarded three W.C. Handy Awards and was nominated for an Grammy.

Tiven started his professional career as a musician journalist in the latter half of the 1960s and was creating content his articles for Rolling Stone, Fusion, Melody Maker, and a variety of different publications. At first, he was an alto saxophonist. Tiven began to learn different instruments. He also became proficient in guitar, enough to compose songs and even accompany himself. After some brief experiments with the higher-education courses in Yale University and Sarah Lawrence College (1972-74) In 1972, he left to pursue a music career. In 1975, Tiven began working for Chess Records in New York However, he quickly realized that working in the record industry was not for him and made the trip to Memphis to create Alex Chilton’s debut solo album”Bach’s Bottom.

Chilton session, Tiven formed the power pop group Prix together with Tommy Hoehn, co-producing the album of eleven songs recorded from Memphis’ Ardent Studios along with Big Star co-founder Chris Bell, who also provided background vocals and guitar. Tiven also brought in Chilton to take part in the recording process too. The year 1976 saw Tiven came back to New York and was greeted by Columbia/CBS Records offered to sign Prix following an appearance in a showcase. Tiven turned down the offer and later negotiated together with Mercury Records, who eventually pulled their offer. The year 1977 saw Tiven license both Prix Chilton and Prix Chilton masters over to Ork Records, which released the double A-side Prix single, and then released the Chilton recordings as an EP titled The Singer not The Song. Following the Prix single came out, in addition to the fact that Ork director Terry Ork indicated he would be hiring the group to CBGB Hoehn decided to leave New York, not wanting to stay in the city. Even though the group split up, Miracle Records released another Prix single in the year following.

A record Tiven initially began producing in the late 1990s by Billie Ray Martin was finally completed and issued as The Soul Tapes. Entering Billboard’s Dance/Club charts at #44 in its first week, “Glittering Gutter” (the first single) became one of Tiven’s most successful records, and demonstrated Tiven’s triple threat: producer, cowriter, musician. Eight remixes by the likes of Mooli, Offer Nissim, Tweaka Turner and Dave Aude were issued and offered new windows into this enigmatic song.
