The Sobey Award is granted to an artist who is 39 years of age or younger and has shown their work in a public or commercial gallery in Canada in the past 18 months, at the time of their application. The press release announcing Pootoogook’s win noted that “her work reflects both the current moment of a specific tradition and of a contemporary drawing practice.”

Pootoogook had her first major solo exhibition in 2006 when her work was displayed as part of a well-received show at The Power Plant in Toronto, Ontario. The exhibition, designed by Nancy Campbell, focused on mythology, Inuit communities and difficulties of life in the Arctic.

The years 2000 were Pootoogook’s most productive time. Between 2001 between 2001 and 2007 when Pootoogook was most prolific artist in her creating. She was an artist on her own in this time, and left in 2001 the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative in 2001. At this time she created intimate scenes from her home that depicted violence, alcoholism, and domestic violence, the everyday life of women within northern Canadian North, the hardships that are faced by Northern communities as well as the effects technological advancements on the traditional Inuit life. Pootoogook has consolidated her style and contents in this time, and began to create images that could easily be identified with her. She made over 1000 drawings on paper, and it was at this point when she was first acknowledged as an artist outside those in the Inuit community.

Annie Pootoogook (May 11, 1969 – – September 19 September 19, 2016,) was a Canadian Inuk artist who was known for her colored and pen pencil drawings. In her work, Pootoogook often portrayed the life experiences of people who lived in her community , Cape Dorset (Kinngait), in Northern Canada and occurrences that she experienced as a person.

Pootoogook started making artwork in 1997 at the age of 28 years old. She was a member of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative (previously named Kinngait Studios) in Cape Dorset, Nunavut. At the beginning of her career with the Co- operative she was not granted any creative freedom.

Annie Pootoogook’s art began to be widely collected by Canadian art institutions in 2006 after she won The Sobey Award. After her death, the lead investigator on the case, Sergeant Chris Hrnchiar posted online comments that were condemned and labelled as racist, commenting that it was likely the death was due to alcoholism or drug abuse because of her ethnicity. He preemptively declared “it’s not a murder case” on social media. An investigation into Hrnchiar’s conduct was undertaken as a result.
