The year 2004 saw the debut to the world of Sonny Boy, a reconstruction of the forbidden love affair between an Surinamese student and an engaged Dutch woman, set against the background of the 1930s and during the Second World War. Based on a real story, the book gained immense acclaim with more than half million copies within the Netherlands by itself. Additionally, it was released in six different countries. Film version written by Dutch filmmaker Maria Peters and premiered in January of 2011 it was the film that opened at the Stony Brook Film Festival in New York in July 2011.
In 2014 Van der Zijl published Gerard Heineken, a biography of Gerard Heineken, the little-known founder of the Heineken brewery and brand.
Jagtlust came to be followed by Anna (2002) Anna (2002), the highly praised biography of the famous Dutch children’s author Annie M.G. Schmidt. The book was nominated for numerous awards. The novel was made into an TV mini-series titled Annie M.G., directed by Dana Nechushtan.
