Aly was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1967. The mother of the child was nurse, and her father was an engineer. When Aly was just two years old her parents and she moved to Australia through an assisted immigration program. They initially settled in Queensland and then in the western Sydney suburbs of Lakemba as well as Chipping Norton, where Aly was a student at an exclusive Anglican Girls’ School called Meriden and her parents employed in factories as well as bus drivers.

Aly lectured in counter-terrorism and security at Edith Cowan University from 2009 to 2011, and then at Curtin University from 2011. She was appointed Associate Professor at Curtin in 2014, and Professor at Edith Cowan in 2015. Aly is an active member of Curtin University’s The Centre for Culture and Technology (CCAT), leading its Countering Online Violent Extremism research program. Aly has written published academic papers, books and newspaper articles on terrorist recruitment and counter-messaging and the involvement of former white supremacists in speaking out against violent extremism.

In 2011, former prime minister Kevin Rudd launched Aly’s first book, Terrorism & Global Security: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives.

While in school, Aly worked part-time teaching English to immigrants. In 2001, Aly became a policy analyst in the Government of Western Australia, which she was employed in the area of the area of multicultural affairs and education from 2000 until 2007. including as an officer of senior status in the Office of Multicultural Interests from 2003. Following the terrorist attacks on 9/11, she was involved in the Western Australian response to the federal government’s anti-terrorism strategy.

Anne Azza Aly (born Azza Mahmoud Fawzi Hosseini Ali Serougi, born in 1967) is an Australian politician who has been an Labor representative in the House of Representatives since the election of 2016, and represents an electorate in Cowan located in Western Australia.

Aly has graduated from American University in Cairo in 1990, with the bachelor of Arts degree with high honors with distinction in English Literature, with a minor in Acting and in 1994, she earned an Graduate Diploma of Arts (Language Studies) from Edith Cowan University; followed by the Master of Education degree in 1996, and a doctoral degree, in 2008 at Edith Cowan University. Her doctoral dissertation focused on the intersection of culture and media, and was titled An investigation of the audience’s responses to media-related discourses concerning the ‘Other’ The fear of Terrorism between Australian Muslims and the Broader Community.

In 2008, Aly received the Dean’s Award for Best New Researcher from Edith Cowan University. In 2009, she won a Publication Award from the Australian Institute of Professional Intelligence Officers, and she was appointed to the Council for Australian Arab Relations at Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and remained on the board for six years. In 2011, she was inducted into the Western Australian Women’s Hall of Fame. Aly’s research has been funded by the Australian Research Council’s Safeguarding Australia Initiative.
