Anna Diamantopoulou (Greek: Anna Diamantopoulou born on the 26th of February, 1959 Kozani, Greece) is a Greek politician currently president of the think tank in Athens “DIKTIO” Network for Reform in Greece and Europe. She was Minister of Education, as well as Minister of Development, Competitiveness and Shipping. She was also the European commissioner in charge of Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities within the Prodi Commission, a post she held from 1999 to 2004. On October 4, 2009, she was reelected as a member of parliament and was Minister for Education Lifelong Learning, Education and Religion Affairs within the Cabinet of George Papandreou. As the minister of education, Diamantopoulou mentioned the declining enrolment in tertiary education as a reason for the elimination of the minimum academic requirements for admission to undergraduates that was long advocated by academics and recently adopted by the state to guarantee better standards. This policy helped to save institutions that were not ranked, such as those in the TEI from Western Macedonia in her former area of operation, since it allowed them to expand their recruitment by allowing students from the lowest percentiles of exam rankings across the country. When confronted with criticisms that her policies were diluting the academic standards for a populist purpose Diamantopoulou said that in the past, applicants who were unsuccessful were admitted to private (tertiaryinstitutions, and even abroad’ in the end.
Diamantopoulou is also known for her authorship of various books on Greece and its European integration. Such an example would be hers Exipni Ellada (Intelligent Greece) which outlines the need for innovation, goal-oriented endeavours and professional approaches as the key prerequisites for social and economic progress. Her other books are: European Integration and Governance: A Comparison with the US Model in Transatlantic Relations: Cooperation or Competition and The Future of Europe: A Discussion for All – A Question of Participation.
Diamantopoulou declares herself a firm believer in Greece’s ability to join the frontrunning countries in the knowledge economy by 2020.
In 2003, Anna Diamantopoulou and Pehr Gyllenhammar presented a nomination ceremony for European awards, which recognize quality of work in the field that include lifelong education, diverse, and gender equality.
