Ann Packer (born 1959) is an American novelist and short story writer most notably as the author of her highly acclaimed debut novel The Dive From Clausen’s Pier. She was awarded an award from James Michener and the National Endowment for the Arts fellowship.
Packer worked for more than 10 years working on The Dive from Clausen’s Pier. Geri Thoma of the Elaine Markson Agency was willing to take on the project and then sold it in a matter of days to Editor Jordan Pavlin at Alfred A. Knopf. The book was the very first selection for the Good Morning America “Read This!” book club. It also was awarded the Great Lakes Book Award, an American Library Association Award, as well as the Kate Chopin Literary Award. The following two books of Packer’s have also been published by Knopf with a novel Songs Without Words (2007) as well as an assortment of short stories called Swim Back to Me (2011). “Things Said or Done,” one of the stories from Swim back to Me, was included in the 2012 O. Henry Award prize collection of short stories. “The Children’s Crusade was published by Scribner in the year 2015 and was selected as one of the 10 most popular books of 2015 in People Magazine.
In 1988, Packer relocated in 1988 to Madison, Wisconsin as a fellow at the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing. In her two years in Wisconsin she wrote stories for literary magazines as well as”Babies”, a short piece “Babies”, which was included in the 1992 O. Henry Award prize collection of stories. Its New Yorker story, “Mendocino” was the basis for the title story for her debut book, Mendocino and Other Stories which was released through Chronicle Books in 1994.

The mother of her was pupil of the novelist and historian Wallace Stegner at the Stanford Writing Program; Nancy Packer later joined the Stanford faculty as a professor of English and creative writing. Her father was a professor at Stanford Law School, where he discussed the tensions among Due Process and Crime Control. In 1969 at the age of 10, Ann was just 10 years old, she was struck with an injury to his brain that rendered him paralyzed on part of his right leg. He took his own life three years afterward.
