A number of James’s books have been awarded or short-listed to be short-listed for Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year awards which include Bernice Knows Best, by Max Dann, (CBCA Junior Book of the Year, 1984) and Hannah Plus One by Libby Gleeson which was awarded the same award in 1997. In the year 1997 The Midnight Gang, written by Margaret Wild, was a CBCA Picture Book of the Year Honor Book It went on to be awarded the award three times. Children’s Choice awards around Australia. Ann Catherine Stewart James AM (born 6 October 1952) is an Australian illustrator of over 60 children’s books, a few of which she wrote. She was born in Melbourne, Victoria Ann James has been creating illustrations for in books from the early 1980s, and has been a major contributor to the growth and appreciation of literature for children in Australia. In 2000, she was awarded with the Pixie O’Harris Award as a official acknowledgement of her contribution and was also the 2002 winner of the nation’s Dromkeen Medal for services towards children’s literature. Ann James currently still lives and is employed in Melbourne which is where she manages her own Books Illustrated gallery and studio which she co-founded with Ann Haddon in 1988.
At this point, James began working as a freelance illustrator for children’s book and books for children, starting by drawing A Pet for Mrs Arbuckle which was created by Gwenda Smyth. They took part in a 1981 contest for illustrators and writers who had not yet published their work. Her book illustration career started to grow, (with fourteen books published in the year 1988), James left the Department of Education and co-founded an art gallery called Books Illustrated, dedicated to illustrations for children’s books. From that point onwards, she’s worked to promote Australian Children’s books, and continued drawing books at her home in Melbourne as well as her studio in the country, close to Castlemaine, Victoria.
James was awarded Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day 2016 Honours List “for significant service to children’s literature as an author and illustrator, and through advocacy roles with literacy and professional bodies”.
