Anja Harteros (born 23 July 1972) is an German singer who sings opera. In 1999 her name was the only German to be the winner of the Cardiff Singer of the World competition.

After graduating from her high school education in the year 1991, Harteros pursued her vocal studies under Liselotte Hammes from the Cologne University of Music. Her teacher of choice Huber-Aulmann continued to tutor her until the start of 1996. Harteros also accompanied Huber-Aulmann during her concert tour during 1993 as well as 1994, to Russia in to the United States, which attracted many interest towards the performer.

In the summer of 1999, she won the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, which led to many invitations for concerts and guest performances. This was the major breakthrough for her career: since then, she has appeared as a guest at all the major world opera houses, including Frankfurt, Lyon, Amsterdam, Dresden, Paris, Hamburg, Vienna, New York City (Metropolitan Opera), Munich, Cologne, and Berlin (Deutsche Oper), as well as the Salzburger Festspiele. She has also given concerts and Lieder recitals all over Germany, as well as in Boston, Florence, London, Edinburgh, Vicenza and Tel Aviv. She sang the title role in a new production of Händel’s Alcina at the opera festival in Munich in 2005.

She sang her first Violetta in La traviata in 2004 and her first Amelia in Simon Boccanegra in 2005 with San Diego Opera.

Her first appearances were in music institute performances and in the school- produced production The Marriage of Figaro in 1990, in the role of the countess. In 1992, she performed her first recital at the Kantonsschule in Schwyz, Switzerland.

Harteros is a native of Bergneustadt, North Rhine-Westphalia, to an Greek father as well as a German mother.
