After graduation from law school, Jackson worked as an assistant to the Judge Harrison L. Winter of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. From 1980 to 1986 she was an assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, where she was awarded Department of Justice Special Achievement Awards for her work in prominent sexual assault and murder cases in 1985 and 1986. From 1986 to 1994 Jackson worked as an associate, and later an associate at Venable, Baetjer, Howard and Civiletti.
