Her fame is primarily due to her coverage of Palestinian matters within Palestine in the West Bank and Gaza, where she has lived for several years.
In June 2001 Judge Rachel Shalev-Gartel from the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court ruled that Hass was a liar to those in the Jewish settlement community in Beit Hadassah located in Hebron as well as ordered her pay two million shekels (about $60,000) in damages. Hass had published reports from Palestinians which claimed Israeli settler settlers had defiled the body of the body of a Palestinian militant who was killed by Israeli police. The settlements claimed that the incident didn’t take place and claimed that Hass was a fraud in reporting the event with intention to harm. The judge in favor of the settlers and said that the accounts on television do not agree with the account of Hass, and also deciding that his report had damaged the community’s reputation. Haaretz stated that it was unable to prepare a defense for the matter and said it was planning to appeal the decision. Hass stated that she provided information of the Palestinian community and stated it was the responsibility of editors to cross-reference this information with other sources such as sources like the IDF or the community of settler.
In 2002 she was honoured with a Prince Claus Award from the Dutch culture and development organisation Prince Claus Fund.
In 2006 she compared Israeli policies toward the Palestinian population to those of South Africa during Apartheid, saying, “The Palestinians, as a people, are divided into subgroups, something which is reminiscent also of South Africa under apartheid rule.”
On the 27th of June, 2001 Hass was awarded his Golden Dove of Peace Prize given by the Rome-based organisation Archivo Disarmo.
