She initially focused on mountain biking, but her biggest success came in the roads. She was the winner of her race in the Rupert up to Pomerelle section of 2001’s Women’s Challenge race with its long steep climb up until the finish. She was it was the fourth American to be the winner of a stage in the Women’s Challenge since it became an UCI race. Then, she focused on road cycling and was chosen as a member of the team for road’s world championships in 2001 and 2002.
Neben was positive for banned substance 19-Norandrosterone on May 31, 2003, following her victory in her first Coupe du Monde Montreal World Cup race. The results of the test were not verified until the “A” sample and “B” sample were both found to contain 6.9ng/ml which was above the limit of 5ng/ml. Neben filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and was granted an interim suspension that began in July 2003. Neben claimed that the positive test was caused by contamination of supplements. Since she was a part of the T-Mobile Women’s Cycling Team, an organization that is owned by USA Cycling, she enlisted USA Cycling top management as witnesses for her defense. Sean Petty, VP of Marketing of USA Cycling, Gerard Bisceglia the CEO of USA Cycling, Steve Johnson COO and Director of Athletics of USA Cycling, Bob Stapleton Vice Chair for T-Mobile USA all testified on her behalf. In the end, North American CAS ruled in October 2003 that doping occurred , however it was not a deliberate act. Neben was suspended, as part of an unanimity decision for six months beginning with the proviso that began on July 13th the 13th of July, 2003. The decision also stipulated that any competitive results that took place after May 31, 2003 were canceled. Thus, her victory in the Coupe du Monde Montreal on May 31st was canceled however it was not the Elite Women’s Road Race National Title which took place the 22nd of May. She will have to undergo tests for drugs every day for the next 18 months.
Neben made the 2012 U.S. Olympic team for the Women’s road race, along with Kristin Armstrong, Shelley Olds and Evelyn Stevens. In the Women’s time trial she finished 7th.
